Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) provide nursing care usually under the direction of medical practitioners, registered nurses, or other health team members. LPNs may work as Operating Room Technicians to prepare patients and provide assistance to medical practitioners prior to and during surgery.

A LPN completes a two-year nursing program either by Direct Entry to Practical Nursing (from high school) or by Access to Practical Nursing. 

The Access to Practical Nursing program is designed to build on the Health Care Assistant (HCA) Certificate. Students who complete or hold an HCA Certificate (or equivalent) may access/bridge-in to the second year of Practical Nursing Diploma. 

Registered nurses (RNs) and registered psychiatric nurses (RPNs) provide nursing care to patients, clients and those in long-term care.

To become a RN, you typically must complete a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) or equivalent, however, there are different entry options for BScN programs in B.C.: Basic Entry to Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and Licensed Practical Nurse Access to Bachelor of Science in Nursing. 

These programs allow Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) to access/bridge-in to the second or third year of a four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) program. Among other program-specific requirements, you must be currently registered and licensed as a full scope LPN in B.C. 

Licensed Practical Nurses are employed in:

Registered nurses and registered psychiatric nurses are employed in:

Practical Nursing Diploma

1. Volunteer experience (minimum 30 hours) in a health care setting or employment in a health care field, working with adults or children in an acute care, long-term care, or community health care agency 

2. Current Standard First Aid certificate at time of application. 

3. Current Basic Rescuer — Level C certificate (included in the Standard First Aid certificate).  

4. Criminal record check  

5. Health assessment indicating fitness to practice, completed within 12 months prior to enrolment.  

6. Completion of an immunization program prior to the program start date. Immunization forms will be included with the letter of acceptance. Proof of immunization must be received by the date specified. 

7. Attendance at an information session in preparation for entry into the program. Application essay questions will be written at this time. 

8. Interview with a faculty member to assess the following:

   • Basic knowledge of the field; 

   • Time management skills; 

   • Communication skills: ability to listen and articulate ideas; 

   • Financial resources and support systems; and 

   • Personal and work commitments in relation to assuming the demands of an applied academic program of studies. 

9. Valid driver’s licence (learner’s licence not acceptable)

2. Work experience requirements - all of:

   • Minimum 600 hours of work experience 

   • Completed in the last 2 years 

   • In a care facility where care is provided to multiple patients/residents*

   • Work experience must be verified by an official employer letter

*Note: Working in a home care environment where one person is cared for at a time does not meet the requirement 

Access to Practical Nursing Diploma

4. Solicitor General Criminal Record Check that is free of any charges or convictions 

5. Immunizations (as required by Practicum sites and recommended by BC Centre for Disease Control, 2009): diphtheria and tetanus, polio, hepatitis B, measles, mumps & rubella (MMR), varicella, and influenza 

6. Negative TB skin test. In case of a positive TB skin test, a negative TB chest x-ray report is required. 

Access to Practical Nursing Diploma

1. Graduation from a Practical Nursing program recognized by the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) since 1994 

Additional admission requirements: 

1. Current practicing registration or be eligible for practicing registration with the BCCNM

2. Submission of a CASPer test score

3. Upon acceptance into the program, the following is required:

   • Criminal Record Check

   • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification

   • Proof of immunization

   • N95 mask fit test

Nursing: Bachelor of Science Degree (BScN) Advanced Entry Program 

Post-secondary requirements are needed to apply to this program.

Post-secondary requirements (minimum grade in brackets if applicable): 

1. Graduation of a Practical Nursing program or equivalent – transcripts required 

2. English – one of:

   • ENGL 1100 (C+) and ENGL 1200 (C+) 

   • ENGL 1101 (C+) and ENGL 1102 (C+) 

3. English Language Proficiency
4. Biology – all of the following taken within the last 5 years:

   • BIOL 1120 (C+) 

   • BIOL 1220 (C+) 

5. Electives: 6 credits of courses in Humanities or Social Sciences (C+)

Additional admission requirements: 

1. Submission of a CASPer test score

2. Current Canadian registration as a Licensed Practical Nurse – proof of license required 

3. Six months or 900 hours worked to the full scope of Licensed Practical Nurse practice within the last five years, verified by a letter form the employer

4. Upon acceptance into the program, the following is required:

   • Completion of a bridging term 

   • Criminal Record Check according to VCC's instructions

   • Current CPR Level C

   • Negative TB skin test

   • Immunization record

   • N95 mask fit test

Academic Foundations for Potential Psychiatric Nursing Applicants Certificate 

High school requirements are needed to apply to this program. This program contains first year courses that may be used toward Bachelor of Psychiatric Nursing Degree programs.

High school requirements (minimum grade in brackets if applicable): 

1. High school graduation or equivalent 

2. English – one of:

   • English 12 (B) 

   • English Studies 12 (B) 

   • English First Peoples 12 (B) 

   • or equivalents 

3. Biology – one of:

   • Life Sciences 11/Biology 11 (B) 

   • Anatomy and Physiology 12/Biology 12 (B) 

   • or equivalents 

4. Math – one of: 

   • Foundations of Math 11 (B) 

   • Foundations of Math 12 (B) 

   • or equivalents 

Psychiatric Nursing: Bachelor of Science Degree (BSN) 

Post-secondary requirements are needed to apply to this program. These requirements are met by completing the Academic Foundations for Potential Psychiatric Nursing Applicants Certificate at Douglas College.

   • 3 credit university transferable ENGL elective

Graduate Nurse, Internationally Education Re-entry Certificate

Post-secondary requirements are needed to apply to this program. 

Post-secondary requirements (minimum grade in brackets if applicable):

1. Completion of an International Registered Nursing Education program verified by a British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) approved credentialing agency

2. If you have completed an International Registered Nursing Education program more than 5 years from the term of admission, one of the following is required:
   • Completion of an Aspire Global Assessment Summary with the following minimum practice competencies:

     • Section 2 with 50%, or less, of undemonstrated competency themes

     • Section 2 with 51%, or more, undemonstrated competency themes, and PNUR 9030, Nurse Ready

   • Successful completion of the NCLEX-RN nurse exam within the last 5 years

   • Current registration as a Canadian licensed practical nurse (LPN)

   • Employed as a registered nurse with a minimum of 1125 hours within the last 5 years

   • Successful completion of the KPU course PNUR 9030, Nurse Ready

Additional admission requirements:

1. Upon acceptance into the program, the following is required:

   • Valid Canadian CPR Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR Health Care Provider (HCP) certification from an approved provider

   • Criminal Record Check through the Ministry of Public Safety and Solicitor General's Criminal Records Review Program

   • Immunization Record Form
