The Power Engineering Certificate takes you through 4th Class Power Engineering and 210 hours of firing time on the NLC Boiler. Upon completion, you will qualify for the Technical Safety BC Examinations by successfully completing Parts A and B of the 4th Class Power Engineering component of the NLC program. The focus is to provide knowledge and practical skills needed to function effectively in the industry.

There are three ways to enter the program. Choose from ONE OF the following options. 

**Option A.**
1. English 12 (C+) or [equivalent](https://www.nlc.bc.ca/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/English_Language_Proficiency_May_2025.pdf)
2. Pre-Calculus 12 (C+) or equivalent
3. Physics 12 (C+) or equivalent

**Option B.**
1. Completion of ESTR 047 (Advanced-Level Essential Skills for Trades) with 67% or higher;"

**Option C.**
1. Completion of the following sections of the Canadian Adult Achievement Test (CAAT)*:
    - Reading Comprehension (12.0)
    - Number Operations (12.0)
    - Problem Solving (12.0)
    - Mechanical Reasoning (51/70, 6th Stanine or higher)
    - Trades Math Assessment (70%)
        - *Note: Based on the results of your assessment(s), you may be required to participate in an assessment interview to determine your admissibility. Interview may be conducted via teleconference if necessary. 

Academic Admission Requirement

1. Dual credit students may enter the program by submitting secondary school transcripts indicating successful completion of English 11, including at least a C+ in English 11, Math 11 and Physics 11. 

2. If you do not meet the above admission requirements, you can gain program entry by successfully completing appropriate assessments and/or upgrading courses. Feedback on the Assessments will be provided to help you make informed decisions about appropriate selection of upgrading courses. For more details, please contact a NLC academic advisor.

3. After acceptance, you are required to provide proof of*:
    - Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) certification
    - Occupational First Aid - Level 1
    - H2S Alive
    - Common Safety Orientation (CSO)
        - *Note: All certificates must be valid for the term of the program. Failure to provide proof may result in immediate dismissal from the program.

4. While studying in the program, students must provide footwear having CSA safety-toe protection and cold weather Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). NLC will provide the following: Hardhat, hearing protection, safety glasses and fire retardant coveralls.

5. Students are required to have a computer (laptop or PC) with the minimum NLC computer requirements.
