In the Bachelor of Arts Degree in Liberal Studies, you'll gain a deeper understanding of who we are and how our values and perspectives have been shaped by certain cultural legacies. The program is designed for students who want a more general education in which the relationships among various disciplines are explored. The program prepares you for further study in a wide range of fields such as law, architecture, education, communications, and more.

1. One of:

- High school graduation (or equivalent) with English Studies 12 (C) or English First Peoples 12 (C) or equivalent 
- Completion of a university degree
- Be a visiting student from a college or university (a "Letter of Permission" from the home institution is required)
- Be a transfer student from a college or university with at least 24 university transfer credits
- Mature student status (be at least 21 years old in your first semester) with English Studies 12 (C) or English First Peoples 12 (C) or equivalent 

Note: If you don't meet any of the admission categories, you may be admitted as an "Unclassified Student" to register into university-level courses which you meet the prerequisites. You will register after other students, so course availability will be limited.


Academic Admission Requirement

1. You can enter VIU at any time before the beginning of the third year of university study, provided that you meet the admission requirements. 
2. No more than 60 credits can be transferred toward a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree at VIU.
3. Aside from program entry/admission requirements, there are also specific course registration requirements (called prerequisites) which are listed within VIU’s course description. Prerequisite = Course that must be successfully completed prior to registering in a given course. English 12 (C) or equivalent is a course prerequisite for registering courses that satisfy the Degree English Requirements in the program. 


Admission Advice

Applications are accepted for September entry until August 15 for domestic students and until May 31 for international students. Early application is recommended.
