The Bachelor of Education (Secondary)
Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Degree prepares you to teach science and mathematics in the context of engineering and technology in secondary school settings. You will qualify for a professional teaching certificate from the BC Ministry of Education, Teacher Certification Branch (TCB). The program includes foundation courses in education, methods courses, and practica. Upon graduation from the STEM program, you will have two degrees: the Bachelor's degree in science or mathematics required for entry into this program and the Bachelor of Education (Secondary) degree.

1. Completion of bachelor of Science degree (120 credits- 2.33 GPA) or equivalent in Math, Science (such as Physics, Biology, Chemistry, or Earth Science), Technology or Engineering on the most recent 60 credits completed.

2. One teachable major or two teachable minors (courses taught in secondary schools) are required:

- Teachable minor consists of 18 credit hours of upper-level courses (numbered 3000 or 4000), in addition to required lower-level courses
- Teachable major consists of 30 credit hours of upper-level courses (numbered 3000 or 4000) in addition to required lower-level courses.

3. Minimum C+ average on six (6) credits of acceptable English Literature and Composition at any level. Note: Courses in linguistics, language study, grammar, technical or business writing, communication, or English as a second language are not acceptable to meet the English requirement.

Academic Admission Requirement

1. Minimum 100 hours of relevant volunteer or paid experience working with groups of middle or high school students. At least 25 of these hours must be be in a secondary-school setting
2. 300-word letter of introduction/intent (outlining the reasons you would like to become a teacher and why you have chosen the Bachelor of Education program as your preparation, as well as any information you feel is pertinent to your application.)
3. Two reference letters (must be sent directly to Admissions)
4. Participation in a 15 minute interview with two to three members of the Bachelor of Education Admissions Committee (at the interview, you will be required to write a spontaneous composition of approximately 500 words on a given topic related to education in a 30-minute timed session)
5. Criminal Record Check (after acceptance into the program; to participate in a practicum) 

Additional Academic Admission Requirement

1. You can arrange to have your interview conducted via Skype and can complete your spontaneous composition at another location and under approved supervision.

2. Admission is competitive. You are encouraged to obtain broader post-secondary studies, greater subject preparation, and higher grades than the minimum standards outlined.

4. It's important to contact TRU's Academic Advising Department to confirm admission requirements and ensure you select appropriate courses for entry into the Bachelor of Education Degree.
