The Alaska Highway Consortium on Teacher Education (AHCOTE) program provides you with tools to uncover their motives for teaching, explore teaching theory and practices, and learn how to use critical inquiry and reflection as tools for ongoing professional development and lifelong learning. you with a previously complete degree can finish the program quicker.

1. One of: 
    - Completion of NLC's Associate of Arts Degree  
    - Completion of at least 60 university-level credits that include all required coursework (these credits must be transferable to SFU and approved by SFU's Faculty of Education) 
    - Completion of a degree from an accredited university 

2. In addition to the above, AHCOTE's admission requirements vary based on your interest in teaching at the elementary or secondary level: 
    - For admission to the Elementary AHCOTE program, you need: 
GPA 2.5+ (calculated on approximately last 60 credits of undergraduate coursework) 
    - 6 credits of English (at least 3 credits of English literature) 
    - 3 credits of First Nations studies   
    - 3 credits of Canadian History 
    - 3 credits of Canadian Geography 
    - MATH 190 (Principles of Mathematics for Teachers) or equivalent 
    - 3 credits of laboratory Science 
    - Meet SFU's literacy requirement 
    - Meet SFU's quantitative requirement 

3. For admission to the Secondary AHCOTE program, you need:  
Completion of a Bachelor's degree from an accredited university (at least 120 credits) 
GPA 2.5+ (calculated on approximately last 60 units of undergraduate coursework) 
    - 1 major or 2 minors in teachable subject area(s).  
    - 6 credits of English (at least three credits of English literature) 
    - 3 credits of First Nations studies 
    - Meet SFU's literacy requirement 
    - Meet SFU's quantitative requirement 

Academic Admission Requirement

1. Admission is competitive. Application process includes a review of academic performance, prerequisite completion, experience in a classroom setting, and an interview. All applicants must apply to both SFU and NLC.  Admission to NLC is conditional upon admission to SFU.

 

2. During the online application process, applicants will be asked to select their grade-level preference (elementary-level vs. secondary-level). While most applicants generally have a single preference, you can select a second preference if you meet the elementary and secondary requirements. Visit SFU program website for details on application process.  

 

3. Applications are accepted from October 1st to January 31st. All applicants must submit official transcripts by January 31st showing completed and in-progress courses. In-progress courses that are required for admission must be completed by August 31.  

4. For a list of accepted prerequisite courses offered at SFU and other BC post-secondary institutions, refer to the Chart of Acceptable Courses. 

Admission Advice

Applications should be submitted directly to SFU. Applications are open from early October to mid-January. 

All applicants must submit official transcripts by late January showing completed and in-progress courses. In-progress courses that are required for admission must be completed by late August.
