Diagnostic medical sonography is also known as ultrasound. Echocardiography is a branch of sonography that uses high-frequency sound waves to examine the structure and function of the heart. Each patient comes with unique needs and you will learn diagnostic problem-solving and team collaboration skills to give each patient the highest quality care.

Competitive entry: Three-step process

Obtaining a seat in this program is competitive. The program mandate is to select those applicants deemed to have the best opportunity for success. BCIT does not guarantee admission to applicants who meet the minimum program entry requirements.

Step 1: Meet the following 

English: two years of education in English in an English-speaking country with one of the following:
English Studies 12 (73%) or
English First Peoples 12 (73%) or
Other acceptable BC and Yukon courses or
3.0 credits of post-secondary English, humanities or social sciences (73%) from a recognized institution

Complete the following assessment:
Casper (Computer-Based Assessment for Sampling Personal Characteristics): Casper will send the results directly to the BCIT Sonography department once you request that your score be distributed to the program.
Note: Please register to complete the Casper assessment as soon as possible. Registration numbers and dates are limited.

Complete the following forms for submission with your online application:
Mandatory Applicant Questionnaire: This form will be used with other  in the competitive selection for the program.
Applicants to the January 2023 intake and later will also be required to submit the Casper Confirmation Form 

Entry options: one of the following:
Option 1:
Two-year diploma in Cardiology Technology, Medical Radiography, Nuclear Medicine, Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or General Sonography and
Active professional certification from the registering body (e.g. CSCT, CAMRT, Sonography Canada, ARDMS)
Option 2:
Bachelor's or master's degree in a health related field from a recognized institution

Applicants who have completed post-secondary studies outside of Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia or New Zealand will require a comprehensive evaluation of their credentials by the International Credential Evaluation Service (ICES). Credential evaluation reports from other Canadian services may be considered. These reports must include course-by-course evaluations and GPA calculations.

Step 2: Shortlisted applicants

The program area will review all complete applications after the application deadline. If you are shortlisted, the program area will contact you to book a virtual meeting and visual-spatial test. 

Step 3: Conditionally accepted applicants

If you have been conditionally accepted to BCIT, you will be notified through myCommunication. The following will be required for full acceptance:

Certification in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) - Level C
Criminal Record Check
Immunization Review 
Submit to Student Health Services
Immunization is a mandatory requirement for this program

MRAD 0150 – Medical Terminology for Imaging (80%)
Access to this free online course is provided once you are conditionally accepted or waitlisted. MRAD 0150 is not required for Option 1 applicants.

The Burwin Institute's Sonography Principles and Instrumentation course
Show proof of one of the following:
Enrollment in this course
Completion of the course within the last 5 years
For applicants from a general sonography background, completion of either the ARDMS SPI exam or the Sonography Canada Core exam within 5 years is acceptable.
The program area will review for the successful completion of the Burwin course prior to the start of Term 2 clinical courses. Students who fail to complete the course by the start of Term 2 will not be eligible to continue in the program and may need to reapply.

Once these and any other outstanding conditions have been met, you will receive notification of your full acceptance.

Academic Admission Requirement

Applications are accepted from May to August.
		
Note: Applicants to this program must be residents of British Columbia. This program does not accept applications from international students.
