The Bachelor of Education in Indigenous Language Revitalization allows you to expand your Indigenous language proficiency while revitalizing your language in your community. Demonstrate linguistically and culturally grounded teaching strategies. You’ll graduate certified to teach grades K-12 in band-run and public schools in BC. The first two years of this program are delivered in partnership with language communities.

1. Completion of the Diploma in Indigenous Language Revitalization

Academic Admission Requirement

1. You’ll start your degree in a certificate program with the Department of Indigenous Education or with Continuing Studies at UVIC. Both are one-year programs that will ladder into the second year of the Indigenous Language Revitalization Diploma. In your third year, you’ll request a transfer to the Bachelor of Education program.

Information about the Indigenous Language Proficiency Certificate offered by UVIC's Department of Indigenous Education can be found at the EducationPlannerBC website as well as UVic website. Apply to the Indigenous Language Proficiency Certificate in the Department of Indigenous Education at UVic by contacting iedlpa@uvic.ca or 250-721-7824.

3. Information about the Indigenous Language Revitalization Certificate offered by UVIC's Continuing Education Department can be found here. Apply to the Indigenous Language Revitalization Certificate in Continuing Studies at UVic by emailing cilr@uvic.ca.

4. The Bachelor of Education is designed for community-delivery, where the first two years (minimum) will be delivered in partnership with a language community or group of communities. The final two years may be delivered in a combination of face-to-face (both on-campus and in community) and distributed learning, bringing cohorts from around the province together OR the individual language community cohorts may continue as a group if student interest and funding warrants.

Both are one-year programs that will ladder into the second year of the Indigenous Language Revitalization Diploma. The intake of and deadline to apply to the Certificate programs depends on community partnership agreement.
