The Proficiency in Language and Culture Certificate merges reading, writing and oral practice with culture and literature in your chosen language specialization. You can choose from French, Spanish, Japanese or Chinese (Mandarin) language courses to give you a competitive advantage in career and business and a better understanding of how to connect with people you are dealing with.

1. One of:

    - High school graduation (or equivalent) with English 12 or English 12 First Peoples (C) or equivalent 
    - A university degree
    - Be a visiting student from a college or university (a “Letter of Permission” from home institution required)
    - Be a transfer student from a college or university with at least 24 university transfer credits
    - Mature student status (be at least 21 years old in your first semester) and English 12 or English 12 First Peoples (C) or equivalent 

Note: If you don't meet any of the admission categories, you may be admitted as an ""Unclassified Student"" to register into university-level courses which you meet the prerequisites. You will register after other students, so course availability will be limited.



Academic Admission Requirement

1. Please be aware that courses in the program may have course prerequisites beyond the program's admission requirements.
2. New students will be placed in language courses according to ability, experience, and previous education.
3. Prior Learning Assessment opportunities: First- and second-year language courses are assessed primarily through the challenge format. The option of the Challenge examination is available for students wishing to "challenge" a Language course when they feel that they have the necessary proficiency in it. The Challenge exam will have the following parts:
    - Written (grammar and vocabulary testing)
    - Oral expression and comprehension
    - Listening comprehension
    - Reading comprehension and composition
    - The Challenge exam is NOT available for students whose mother tongue is the same as the language that they wish to challenge.

Applications are accepted for September entryon an ongoing basis. Early application is recommended.
