The Forestry Resources Technology Diploma provides the technical training required for starting a career in most fields of forest technology. The program emphasizes the recognition and appreciation of all the major values of the forest including timber, recreation, wildlife, range, fish, water, and visual landscapes. The program is accredited by the Canadian Technology Accreditation Board. Graduates of this program meet the required standard for membership in the Association of B.C. Forest Professionals (ABCFP) as Registered Forest Technologists (RFT).

1. One of:

    - High school graduation (or equivalent) with English 12 or English 12 First Peoples (C)
    - A university degree
    - Be a visiting student from a college or university
    - Be a transfer student from a college or university with at least 24 university transfer credits
    - Mature student status (be at least 21 years old in your first semester) and English 12 or English 12 First Peoples (C)

2. English 12 (C) or equivalent
3. Math - one of: 

    - Principles of Mathematics 11 (C)
    - Pre-Calculus 11 (C)
    - Applications of Mathematics 11 (C+)
    - Foundations of Mathematics 11 (C+)
    - equivalent

4. Science - one of: 

    - Biology 11  (C+)
    - Chemistry 11 (C+)
    - Physics 11 (C+)
    - Earth Science 11 (C+)
    - Forestry 11 (C+)
    - equivalent

Note: If you don't meet any of the admission categories, you may be admitted as an ""Unclassified Student"" to register into university-level courses which you meet the prerequisites. You will register after other students, so course availability will be limited



Academic Admission Requirement


1. Physical fitness for work in the woods
2. Previous forestry-related employment is an asset


Additional Academic Admission Requirement

1. Forestry 11 and 12 and Biology 11 are recommended.
2. Enrollment in the program is limited. Meeting or exceeding the minimum admission requirements does not guarantee admission into the program. 
3. If you don't meet the admission requirements, you are encouraged to speak with a VIU advisor about the option of taking upgrading courses. With written permission, some students may be allowed to register in some first year Forestry courses while upgrading. Please check with an Advisor for details.
4. Aboriginal students can apply for reserve seats by submitting an Access Initiative for Aboriginal Students form. 


Admission Advice

Applications are accepted for September entry until late July for domestic students. Early application is recommended.

Seats in the program are offered as follows: first completed applications are given first offers, until all seats are filled
