In the Juris Doctor Law Degree, you'll have the chance to choose  from a wide range of legal disciplines, including the world’s first degree in Indigenous law. In this program, you'll learn about law within its wider social, political, historical and economic contexts. The program is built on a sense of civic responsibility. This program also offers the only common law co-operative education program in Canada.

To be considered for entry into first year regular applicants must:

1. One of:
    - Completion of a Bachelor's degree from the University of Victoria or an equivalent degree from a recognized post-secondary institution
    - Completion with standing satisfactory to the Faculty of Law, at least the first three years (45 units or 30 courses) of a program leading to a degree at the University of Victoria, or the equivalent at a recognized institution

2. Law School Admission Test (LSAT) score obtained in the last five years

Academic Admission Requirement

1. Personal statement (not exceeding 750 words)
2. One academic letter of reference
3. One reference letter describing your suitability for the program

Additional Academic Admission Requirement

1. A relatively small first-year class to the Juris Doctor (JD) program is admitted each Fall to ensure that the student body reflects the diversity found in Canadian society. The number of applications received exceeds the number of spaces available for each program. 

2. Admission decisions are mainly based on your pre-law academic record (weighted 50%) and LSAT score (weighted 50%). Your personal statement may also be taken into account during the application assessment process

3. Law School Admission Test (LSAT) score should be written no later than the January test date.

4. The deadline for submitting post-secondary transcripts is March. 

5. If your first language is not English and you have not completed a minimum of three full academic years of post-secondary study that was taught and assessed in English, you must submit your Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) results. Applicants who do not meet these TOEFL minimums will not normally be admitted to the Faculty of Law. Minimum TOEFL score requirements:

    - Internet Based Test - 100 with no less than 25 on each of the individual components
    - Computer Based Test - 250 out of a possible 300
    - Paper Based Test - 600 out of a possible 677

6. Students may inquire about and apply for admission under the Indigenous category. 

7. It is also possible to apply to the program as a "Special Access" applicant. To qualify under the discretionary category, your academic achievements must have been significantly delayed, interrupted or adversely affected by: physical, cultural or economic factors; or family or similar responsibilities and the need to attend to these responsibilities or to maintain employment. 

8. Upper-year admissions to the Law Degree may be available for students from other law schools or with foreign law degrees. The number of students admitted to upper-year seats is determined by the number of available places in upper-level courses. 

Admission Advice

- Online applications usually open early September. Applications and all required documents must usually be submitted early December for September entry. Check the program website for exact dates.

- Proof of English language proficiency is typically due one month after the application deadline. Your language-proficiency deadline will be indicated in your online application checklist after you submit your online application to UVic.
