The Health Care Assistant Certificate is designed to provide you with the opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to function as a front-line caregiver and respected member of the health care team, in community and facility settings. Under the direction and supervision of a health professional, you learn to provide person-centred care aimed at promoting and maintaining the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social well-being of clients, residents, or patients. You'll gain classroom and practicum experience before you find employment in residential care facilities, home support, and more.

1. One of:
 
    - High school graduation or equivalent
    - Completion of Grade 11, including English 11 or equivalent
    - Completion of at least six credits at the post-secondary level
  
2. [English Language Proficiency](https://www.ufv.ca/calendar/current/General/EnglishProficiency.htm)
 
    - Proof of meeting the HCA program entry English language competency requirements.

Notes: Mature students (at least 19 years old) will be considered for admission if they meet the prerequisites for ENGL 091, ENGL 099, or ENGL 105 


Academic Admission Requirement

1. Current Standard First Aid with CPR-C, or Emergency First Aid with CPR-C or with CPR-HCP.

2. Signed health assessment indicating physical fitness and emotional stability (Form will be provided at interview)

3. Written reference (work or personal)
4. Familiarity with computers and able to answer emails, access course documents, complete assignments, and access online workplace training orientation modules

5. Program information session (when notified after submitting / completing your application)

6. Interview with a program faculty member to determine suitability for the program

7. The following will be required upon acceptance into the program:

    - Valid driver's license and reliable transportation to all practicum (ie - practical work experience) sites				
    - Proof of immunization (after acceptance into the program; forms will be provided)				
    - Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check				

Additional Academic Admission Requirement

1. Prerequisite = Course that must be successfully completed prior to registering in a given course. 
 
2. In addition to submitting an online application form to UFV, you are also required to submit an additional application form for the Health Care Assistant Program. 
 
    - Once you have completed/submitted your application, your will be notified of and expected to attend a program information session. Failure to attend the information session may delay entry to the program. You will be contacted when dates and times have been established; a health questionnaire will be provided and must be returned to the School of Health Studies prior to interview.
 
3. The following will be assessed at the interview with program faculty member:
 
    - knowledge of and motivation toward a career as a home support/resident care attendant;
    - financial preparation;
    - communication skills.
 
4. Qualified candidates will be admitted in order of their application date. This date is set when an application, all required documentation, and the application fee have been submitted.

Admission Advice

As part of B.C.’s response to COVID-19, UFV has partnered with the Province of British Columbia to provide a coordinated employment and education pathway for Health Care Assistants (HCA). Those interested in beginning a career as an HCA will use the government process to apply to the Health Career Access Program and follow those requirements once accepted. UFV is not currently accepting applications directly for the Health Care Assistant certificate at this time. UFV’s regular application process will resume at the completion of the government initiative. More information of the Health Care Assistant program can be found at www.ufv.ca/hca. This program is available to domestic applicants only.

For September start date applications due early May or until spots are filled; for January start date applications due early September or until spots are filled.
