The Bachelor of Arts in Music major is a four-year program offered in the Faculty of Arts for students interested in music but not intending to pursue music performance professionally or who do not meet the special admission requirements for the School of Music’s Bachelor of Music degree. As a student, you can be heavily involved in music during your undergraduate degree without a required performance and audition component and will have plenty of flexibility in choosing your coursework.

Students must be admitted into Bachelor of Arts to pursue this program.

1. High school graduation or equivalent

2. English Studies 12 or English First Peoples 12 or [equivalent](https://you.ubc.ca/applying-ubc/requirements/english-language-competency/) AND English 11 or their equivalents (70% in one of them)

3. Minimum six academic/non-academic Grade 12 courses (recommended)

4. Pre-Calculus 11 or Foundations of Math 12 or equivalent 

5. Any Science 11 or Science 12 course or equivalent 

6. A [Language 11](https://vancouver.calendar.ubc.ca/admissions/applicants-following-bcyukon-secondary-school-curriculum/minimum-academic-qualifications) or [Waiver](https://you.ubc.ca/applying-ubc/applied/submit-documents/#canadian_high_school_student) (includes all second language courses, excludes introductory language 11 courses)

7. The following subject categories are particularly relevant for this degree. Consider taking courses in these areas in Grade 11 and Grade 12.
    - Language Arts
    - Mathematics and Computation
    - Second Languages
    - Social Studies 
    - Visual and Performing Arts 

*Note: There is no minimum number of courses required for admission, but you are encouraged to challenge yourself with a substantial number of courses that are relevant to your intended area of study.

1. Students may declare a Major, Minor or Honours within the Bachelor of Arts degree. While coursework usually starts in the first-year, the Major is declared at the end of second-year study at UBCV (after completing 54 credits, including passing the required 100 and 200-level courses in music theory and music history). There are no performance requirements.

2. Entrance to the Music Major is through the course Music 100: Principles of Musical Form. Bachelor of Arts students may receive permission to take Music 100 by passing the Music 100 Placement Test (sample test and answer key).
