The Contemporary Music & Technology program trains musician performers for the commercial music industry. The curriculum includes individual instruction on guitar, voice, bass, drums, saxophone, violin, and keyboards, as well as a solid grounding in music theory and ear training. Individual and ensemble instruction and practice is offered throughout both years of the program. Rock, blues, jazz, folk and world music are the primary instructional styles.

1. One of:
    - High school graduation or equivalent
    - Minimum 19 years of age
      Note: If you are under the age of 19 and/or do not have a BC senior secondary school diploma or     
      equivalent, you must be enrolled in a secondary school transitions program, be enrolled in a program 
      under an agreement with the local school district, or have written consent from a parent or guardian and 
      letters of support from people who are familiar with your circumstances, such as a school principal or 
      health care provider.

2. English Studies 12 (60%) or equivalent 


Academic Admission Requirement


1. Audition/interview to assess the following:

Instrumental ability on an instrument/voice (accepted instruments are: guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, voice, saxophone, trumpet, banjo, mandolin, and violin/fiddle)
Basic music theory proficiency equivalent to the Royal Conservatory Grade II (through a written examination that includes identifying intervals, key signatures and triads)
Ear training test for pitch, triads, rhythmic and melodic diction and interval recognition

Additional Academic Admission Requirement


1. You are expected to attend the interview in person. However, if it is not feasible to do an audition in person, other arrangements can be made. The theory and Ear Training Test can be sent to you for invigilation by an authorized person. The performance portion can be submitted through approved audio/media material or by providing a link to an online video.

2. Applicants who perform an exceptional audition but who do not meet the theory and ear training standard will be required to attend a two-week theory preparation course in August. In this case, you must have a minimum final grade of 75% in both the ear training and the theory sections to be accepted into the Music program for September. 

3. Applicants who do not meet the minimum standard in matching pitch will not be accepted into the Music Program.

4. Completed applications (except for the audition) are recommended to be submitted to the Registrar’s office by April 30th prior to the start of the next intake of the program. Applications may be accepted after this date with permission of the school chair. Auditions normally must be completed by May 31. Auditions are arranged by the department when the completed application form and transcripts are submitted. Contact the Department for more details.

5. Students in the program would spend the initial core year studying music theory and ear training, and then choose a major in the second year of your study. Study your instrument and related skills in the first year and choose a major in the second. There are five program majors to choose from. 

Admission Advice

Applications must be submitted by the end of April for the program intake that starts in September. Earlier application is strongly recommended. The audition process must be completed before the end of May.
