Nicola Valley Institute of Technology (NVIT) is a full and independent member of BC's public post-secondary education system with legislated authority to grant its own course credits and transcripts. NVIT offers innovative, relevant credentials for future First Nations leaders in the fields of Wellness, Governance, Land, and Economic Development. These programs are guided by the commitment and vision of the Nicola Valley's six local bands. This vision encompasses and honors First Nations traditional culture and values, and recognizes the need to balance these within the educational goals of the Institute's curriculum. NVIT believes in a holistic approach to education whereby the student's knowledge base is enhanced by those values unique to First Nations culture.

Any applicants who require special consideration (such as students with disabilities or international students) must begin the admissions process at least 4 months prior to the start date of classes.

Although some programs and/or courses at NVIT do not require Grade 12 or equivalent, any of the following qualifications are generally accepted where Grade 12 or equivalent is listed as a requirement for admission:

- High school graduation or equivalent
- BC Adult Graduation Diploma
- General Educational Development program and complete an assessment (subject to specific program admission and/or course prerequisites)
- Mature students who have not graduated from a BC secondary school may be admitted to the College Readiness program, or desired program, upon completion of an assessment indicative of required English and Math requirements
- An important part of the application process is to share your full educational history. Before making admission decisions, NVIT must receive official transcripts (an official record of your grades) from high school and/or other educational institutes you have attended.  An official transcript is one that is sealed and sent directly from the institution to NVIT.  Transcripts faxed directly from another institution to NVIT are acceptable.

NVIT General Admission 

English is the language of instruction and communication at Nicola Valley Institute of Technology (NVIT); therefore, all applicants must demonstrate fluency in English by fulfilling one of the following options:
- Two years of full-time study, at the grade 8 level or higher, with English as the language of instruction. (Studies that are part of an English as a Second Language program cannot be used towards fulfilling this requirement.)
- Successful completion of BC English 11 (C+) or equivalent
- Successful completion of a university transferable, post-secondary level English course (C)
- TOEFL (computer-based) = at least an overall score of 213 with an essay score of 4.0
- TOEFL (paper-based) = at least an overall score of 550 with a Test of Written English (TWE) score of 4.0
- Language Proficiency Index (LPI) = at least a score of 4 within the past two years
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS) = at least a score of 6.0 on each of the academic listening, reading, writing, and speaking modules of the exam.

Transfer credit is not done automatically. Students are responsible for initiating the transfer credit process. To receive transfer credit, you must submit an official transcript with your Application for Admission or Readmission along with an Application for [Transfer Credit form](https://www.nvit.ca/docs/D650E86EF5E44EF9.pdf). A detailed course description/outline may also be required before credit can be evaluated. Please note that calendar descriptions do not provide enough information to determine equivalencies.

If you do not meet minimum educational requirements for a desired program, you may demonstrate these requirements through an assessment and/or upgrade by completing appropriate program admission requirements and course pre-requisites.

BC High school transcripts can be requested from the high school, school district office, or using the [StudentTranscript service](https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/education-training/k-12/support/transcripts-and-certificates).

NVIT BC Secondary School

International applicants must follow the following steps:

- Submit official transcripts for all education completed at a grade/year 10 level and higher to the [International Credential Evaluation Service](https://www.bcit.ca/ices/) for assessment. Please contact the International Credential Evaluation Service for more information regarding the evaluation process and associated fees.
- If English was not the language of instruction for the last three years of your education, you will also need an official TOEFL score including the TWE (or essay) portion with a minimum score of 270 (or 230 if the computer-based TOEFL taken) on the Listening, Structure/Writing, Reading portions and 5.0 on the essay portion.
- Once the above, as well as any program-specific admission requirements have been met, NVIT will provide a Full Offer of Admission. Learners must take this letter to the nearest Canadian Embassy or High Commission to apply for a Study Permit. When/if a study permit is issued, please forward a copy of that permit to NVIT and we will begin the registration process.
- International students interested in attending NVIT should contact the Merritt or Vancouver Campus for information on admission procedures and program availability.
