The Dental Hygiene Diploma is designed to prepare you with the knowledge, skills, and values to provide safe and competent primary oral health care. The program emphasizes the importance of a wellness model of care and evidenceinformed practice as you learn to provide comprehensive and culturally sensitive dental hygiene care to individuals, families, and communities. Throughout the program, you develop the skills to communicate and collaborate effectively with clients and interdisciplinary teams, applying theory in hands-on practice and participate in international field schools. Graduates are employed in a variety of settings including clinical practice, community health care, and independent practice, and are eligible to apply for degree completion at a variety of post-secondary institutions.

Entry to the Dental Hygiene program is in second year.

1. High school graduation or equivalent 
2. English
Two of the following or equivalent:
    - ENGL 151 (C+)* 
    - ENGL 161 (C+)
    - ENGL 163 (C+)
    - ENGL 164 (C+)
    - ENGL 251 (C+)*

3. Human Anatomy and Physiology
One pair of the following or equivalent:
    - both BIOL 143 (C+) and BIOL 144 (C+)
    - both BIOL 150 (C+) and BIOL 151 (C+)
    - both BIOL 152 (C+) and BIOL 153 (C+)

4. Chemistry
Two of the following or equivalent:
    - CHEM 110 (C+)
    - CHEM 112 (C+)
    - CHEM 120 (C+)
    - CHEM 121 (C+)

5. Psychology
Two of the following or equivalent:
    - PSYC 110 (C+)*
    - PSYC 120 (C+)
    - PSYC 130 (C+)
    - PSYC 154 (C+)*
    - PSYC 160 (C+)
    - PSYC 164 (C+)
    - PSYC 171 (C+)

6. Statistics for Social Sciences
One of the following or equivalent:
    - STAT 116 (C+)
    - STAT 216 (C+)
    - STAT 218 (C+)
    - BUS 230 (C+)

7. One additional 100-level or higher university transferable course as an elective (C+).

Note: (*) = highly recommended 

Academic Admission Requirement

1. High school students preparing for this program will need an  English Language Arts 12, Biology 12, Chemistry 12 and Foundations Math 11 or Pre-Calculus Math 12 to complete the university transfer courses.

2. Upon acceptance to the program, the following will be required:
    - Documentation of a current Standard First Aid Certificate with CPR (Basic Life Support). Currency must be maintained throughout the program
    - Negative TB skin test or a negative chest x-ray dated no more than six months before the program start date
    - Evidence of immunization status. You are highly recommended to maintain current immunizations as per the Practice Education Guidelines of B.C. Recommended immunizations are found on the Health Sciences Placement Network of Canada website by searching for immunization guidelines.
    - Criminal Record Check (Camosun will send you information on how to complete your Criminal Record Check after you have been accepted to your program.)

3. During the program you will be assigned to practice sessions. These sessions will involve a variety of dental hygiene treatments and procedures including local anesthesia.

4. Failure to comply with immunization guidelines could impact a student’s ability to successfully complete the clinical/practicum placement and/or a clinical/community rotation.

5. This program is open to international students.
