The Doctor of Medicine Northern Medical Program (NMP) is a distributed site of UBC’s Faculty of Medicine MD Undergraduate Program, delivered in partnership with UNBC. The NMP is focused on training physicians from and for northern and rural communities. The NMP incorporates the practices of rural and remote medical education from around the world, providing classroom and early clinical exposure to rural healthcare delivery. You'll have the chance to undertake numerous rural health and northern living experiences as part of extracurricular shadowing opportunities, Indigenous cultural experiences, and NMP/student social activities.

Academic Admission Requirement

1. Essay and proof of ancestry if you wish to apply as an Indigenous applicant (Status Indians, Non-Status Indians, Métis, or Inuit)
1. List of extracurricular activities
2. Report of non-academic experiences and rural interest statement
3. Resume (employment history)
4. Submit three references, when required
5. Rural/Remote Suitability Evaluation (if applicable)
6. Participate in an interview (if granted, which follows the Multiple Mini-Interview format where each applicant rotates through 10 different stations)

Additional Academic Admission Requirement

1. The Northern Medical Program (NMP) is part of the UBC Faculty of Medicine Undergraduate Program. Through UBC's Admissions Office, 32 students are welcomed into the NMP every year. You must apply using the online application available on UBC's Faculty of Medicine website.

2. No particular degree program is considered ideal as preparation for the study and practice of medicine. A variety of pre-medical academic backgrounds is considered desirable.

3. Only Canadian citizens and permanent residents of Canada may apply to the program. Persons with refugee status in Canada can also apply, however admission will be contingent on attaining permanent residency in Canada and providing proof of this status two weeks prior to the start of classes.

4. Preference is given to residents of BC. However, a small number of out-of-province applicants are accepted each year. 

6. Admission is extremely competitive. There are far more applicants than available spaces in the program. Details on admission criteria and selection process can be found at M.D. Undergraduate Admissions.

7. The Faculty of Medicine’s distributed education model provides 288 annual medical school seats based at four regional medical programs. See Academic Calendar for detailed descriptions. 

    - 32 students in the Northern Medical Program (NMP) = based at the University of Northern British Columbia in Prince George
    - 32 students in the Island Medical Program (IMP) = based at the University of Victoria on Vancouver Island
    - 32 students in the Southern Medical Program (SMP) = based at UBC’s Okanagan campus in Kelowna
    - 192 students in the Vancouver Fraser Medical Program (VFMP) = based at UBC Vancouver’s Point Grey campus

8. The selection of students for the Northern Medical Program is the same as all medical students (i.e. - Island Medical Program and the Vancouver Fraser Medical Program), with the addition of a "Rural Remote Suitability" score which estimates each candidate's aptitude and attitude for rural education. Admission Advice

The Online Application is made available from mid-late June to September 15:

September 15, 2023 (noon Pacific Time): deadline for submission of applications (including online application, all applications fees, all North American transcripts, and proof of BC Residency (if required)). MCAT scores, international transcripts and WES/ICES evaluations are not required until October 16.
October 16, 2023 (noon Pacific Time): deadline for receipt of MCAT scores via the MCAT Score Reporting System.
