The Associate of Arts (Health Studies) prepares you for entry into health-related degree programs and provides broad coverage across the Arts and Sciences while introducing you to nursing with prerequisite requirements in the social sciences, English, Indigenous studies, human anatomy and physiology, microbiology, psychology, and statistics.

1. High school graduation or equivalent
2. English 12 (C+) or equivalent
3. Math 11 (C) or equivalent
4. Biology 12 (B) or equivalent (completed within the past 5 years) 
5. Chemistry 11 (C+) or equivalent (completed within the past 5 years)
 
Note(*): Chemistry 12 is strongly recommended. 

Academic Admission Requirement

1. After acceptance into the program and within 6 weeks of the program start date, the following will be required:

Immunizations (information will be provided in the admission package) 

Additional Academic Admission Requirement

1. After acceptance into the program and before you can participate in activities at Health care settings, a Criminal Record Check (Ministry of Justice, Schedule B) will be required within six weeks of the program start date. Failure to do so may result in immediate dismissal from the program. 

2. Aside from program entry/admission requirements, there are also specific course registration requirements (called course prerequisites) which are listed within Northern Lights College’s course description. Course prerequisite(s) = Course(s) which must be completed prior to registering in a given course. Please make sure you meet the course prerequisites before registering individual courses. 

3. If you do not meet the above admission requirements, you can gain program entry by successfully completing the appropriate assessments and/or upgrading courses. Feedback on the Assessments will be provided to help you make informed decisions about appropriate selection of upgrading courses. For more details, please contact an academic advisor at NLC. 

4. Completion of NLC's Associate of Arts Degree (Health Studies) does not guarantee admission to UNBC's Northern Baccalaureate Nursing program. However, NLC Associate of Arts Degree (Health Studies) graduates who meet UNBC's grade requirements will be among NLC students who have access to a number of designated priority seats. For UNBC's admission process, NLC students will be defined as students who have completed a minimum of 15 credits at NLC within the past 10 years. 
  
5. Students are required to have a laptop or other mobile device with the minimum NLC computer requirements, a medical uniform or nursing scrubs and WCB-approved safety/nursing shoes.
