The Retail and Hospitality Careers Certificate provides the skills and knowledge to work in retail and hospitality through practical experience in community-based work settings. This program is intended for adults with cognitive disabilities. Students will apply organizational, time management skills, and Foodsafe to the service industry. Students will learn appropriate workplace communication skills, and perform skills specific to industry in an independent and reliable manner.

1. Minimum Grade 5 reading level (Lesser qualified applicants may be admitted with the instructor's approval)

Academic Admission Requirement

1. Participation in 2 screening interviews (to determine the applicant's suitability for the program):

    - First screening interview with the CACE Student Services Assistant for Students with Disabilities 
    - If successful in the first interview, the applicant will participate in the second interview with the Retail and Hospitality Careers faculty member, which includes a hands-on assessment

2. Documentation and at the interviews to support assessment of the following admission criteria:
 
    - Diagnosis or history that identifies a difficulty with learning
    - Comfortable in an alternative learning environment designed for students with disabilities
    - Previous career exploration that supports training in the hospitality industry
    - Ability to travel independently to the college and workplace
    - Free of emotional or medical concerns that would significantly impair learning or safety
    - Ability to manage own medications
    - Demonstrate appropriate personal hygiene and have the ability to independently attend to personal care needs
    - Demonstrate desire and willingness to work in the retail and/or hospitality sectors, and perform tasks in an efficient and timely manner
    - Ability to attend classroom and practicum on a full-time basis
    - Willingness to work and perform program-related tasks with strength and endurance
    - Good finger and hand dexterity for handling equipment

Additional Academic Admission Requirement

1. Upon acceptance to the program, you may need to provide a successful Criminal Record Check (Vulnerable Sector Search) to meet the requirement of some practicum placements.
2. This program is available to Canadian citizens and permanent residents. Applicants must be 16 years of age or older or a graduate of a secondary school.
3. Applicants who self-identify as Indigenous are strongly encourages to connect with VCC's Indigenous Education and Community Engagement team to learn more about VCC's Indigenous Enrolment policy and services.
4. If you are missing any prerequisites, VCC offers academic upgrading, English as a Second Language courses, and university transfer options. Applicants must submit official transcripts and other documents as required by their course or program.
