Learn to function effectively as a frontline caregiver while upgrading your English speaking, reading, writing, and listening for the workplace with the Health Care Assistant (EAL) certificate. The program consists of theory, laboratory practice, English language instruction, and clinical experience. Continuous English language skill instruction and support, aligned with expected language outcomes and standards at the target CLB levels, is provided throughout the program as you acquire the skills of a Health Care Assistant.

1. Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test (Listening 6, Speaking 6, Reading 6 and Writing 5) completed within the past twelve (12) months

Academic Admission Requirement

1. Standard First Aid (Red Cross or St. John Ambulance) including CPR Level C or CPR Basic Life Support (BLS)
2. BC Food Safe Certificate Level 1

Additional Academic Admission Requirement

1. VCC Health Care Assistant (EAL) program requires higher Canadian Language Benchmark Placement Test (CLBPT) scores for admission than are listed in the BC Care Aide and Community Health Worker Registry document. As noted above, CLBPT must have been completed within the last 12 months with a Listening 6, Speaking 6, Reading 6 and Writing 5
2. Upon acceptance, you must:

    - Criminal Record Check (CRC) through the BC Ministry of Justice (you are responsible for the cost of the CRC; this must be received by the Registrar's Office before the first day of classes)
    - Proof of a negative TB skin test or chest x-ray.
    - Completed immunization history (forms are available at VCC Registrar's Office); the following immunizations are strongly recommended and may be required for practicum placements:
    - Diphtheria/Tetanus/Pertussis
    - Polio
    - Measles, Mumps & Rubella
    - Varicella (Chicken pox)
    - Hepatitis B
    - Influenza (annually) 
    - Properly fitted for an N95 a respiratory mask (you are responsible for the cost of mask fitting).

3. It is recommended that you have:
 
    - Ability to work under direction and to act with initiative as a member of the health care team
    - Genuine concern for the well-being of others
    - Patience, perseverance, and dependability
    - Ability to use a problem-solving approach
    - Physical stamina
    - Flexible, adaptable and non-judgmental attitude in adjusting to a variety of working environments
