The Human Services-Educational Assistant/Community Support Certificate prepares students to provide support and assist individuals with a broad ranger of differing abilities through first-hand experience and workplace practicums. Core themes of social issues and ethics pertaining to disabilities, human development, and health and wellness will allow students to implement their skills and knowledge through supervised practice experience in a school or community agency.

Academic Admission Requirement

1.  A signed Human Services Requisite Skills and Abilities document
2. 300-word HSW Letter of intent for coming into the program and career goals.


Additional Academic Admission Requirement

1. Students with Indigenous ancestry may be eligible for a priority seat. For information about priority admission for aboriginal applicants, please refer to NIC's Indigenous Education Services program page or contact an Indigenous Advisor at a NIC campus.

2. After being accepted into the program and before classes begin, you will be required to:
    - Attend a mandatory group information session
    - Hold a Standard First Aid Certification with CPR Level C (must remain valid to the end of the program)
    - Submit a Criminal Record Check permission form (see Intake Package for details)
    - Complete a Personal Immunization form (must be validated by the public health nurse at your local health unit)

3. If you do not meet the academic admission requirements, you have the option of taking upgrading courses at NIC to help you gain entry to the program.

4. Students in the Human Services Certificate program are not required to complete PSY 130 and PSY 131 prior to registering in PSY 250 and PSY 251 in the program. 

Admission Advice

Applications may be submitted starting 11 months before the intended program start date. Early application is recommended. Applications are open on the first business day in October. Students are accepted on a first applied, first qualified basis. Early application is encouraged.
