The Certified Medical Laboratory Assistant (CMLA) Certificate is a comprehensive entry-level certificate in pre-analytic laboratory sciences. This program prepares you for your role as integral members of the healthcare team by providing a broad foundation in laboratory science theory integrated with authentic simulation environments and workplace clinical practicums. You'll learn to incorporate exemplary patient and client-centric behaviours while mastering the techniques of blood collection (phlebotomy), analytical sample collection and preparation, and perform electrocardiagrams. As a Certified Medical Laboratory Assistant, you’ll find employment as a phlebotomist, diagnostic assistant, technical assistant, or in pre-analytical specimen preparation. Further professional opportunities for the CMLA exist in management, quality control and assurance, education, informatics, and research.

1. High school Grade 12 graduation or equivalent
2. English 12 (B) or equivalent
3. Math 10 (B) or equivalent
4. Anatomy and Physiology 12 (C) or equivalent
5. Chemistry 11 (C) or equivalent
6. Medical Terminology 
One of:
- MOA 155 (B)
- Completion of an equivalent
- Course (B) consisting of a minimum of 60 hours 

Academic Admission Requirement

1. Complete Physical Requirements Online Form
2. Attendance at a Certificate Medical Laboratory Assistant Program Information Session (Note: An online option of the Information Session is available for anyone unable to attend in person)
3. 40 hours of volunteer work in an interactive patient related environment
4. 40 words-per-minute keyboarding skill

Additional Academic Admission Requirement

1. The following will be required upon acceptance into the program:
- Criminal Record Check (Camosun will send you information on how to complete your Criminal Record Check after you have been accepted to your program.)
- Respirator mask ‘fit-testing’ prior to the first clinical experience (note: students are responsible for any associated costs)
- Completion of Standard First Aid and CPR Level C prior to practicum (currency must be maintained throughout the program)
- Evidence of negative TB (TB skin test or chest x-ray). This must be done no more than six months prior to the practicum date.
- Evidence of immunizations against preventable, communicable diseases. 
- Maintaining current immunizations are highly recommended as per the Practice Education Guidelines of BC

2. Recommended immunizations are found on the Health Sciences Placement Network of Canada website by searching for immunization guidelines. Failure to comply with immunization guidelines may result in student’s inability to successfully complete the clinical/practicum placement course and/or a clinical/community rotation.

3. Students must accept assigned clinical site placements, subject to availability and capacity.

Qualified applicants are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Early application is recommended.

If you are a current Grade 12 at a BC/Yukon high school, You can apply for conditional admission between September and May.
