The Juris Doctor Degree balances traditional areas of practice with emerging fields of specialization. Your first year will cover common curriculum – with classes in Canadian Constitutional Law, Contracts, Criminal Law and Procedure, Property Law, Torts, Legal Research and Writing, Public Law and Transnational Law – and your second and third years offer a wide range of courses and many opportunities for specialization. You'll have the opportunity to participate in clinics and externships to gain experience before embarking on a career in law or using your skills in a related field.

For Applicants to First-Year of Juris Doctor Degree

**I. General Admission Requirements** - General Applicants must have completed one of the following:

1A) Undergraduate degree in an approved course of studies from a degree-granting university; or

1B) First three years (at least 90 credits) of an approved course of studies leading to an undergraduate degree at UBCV or equivalent approved university; or

1C) First two years of studies leading to an undergraduate degree at UBCV, or equivalent at a college or other university, and be currently enrolled in the third year of the degree program. An offer of admission will be conditional on:
- Completion of the third-year study with at least 90 credits (including at least 30 credits at the senior-level) by June 30th at UBCV or other degree granting university; and
Maintenance of the academic average obtained in the first two years of studies

Notes:
- Competition for program admission is very high; as a result a high academic average will be needed for applicants to have a reasonable chance of being accepted.
- Courses completed toward a diploma program and subsequently transferred to a degree program will not be considered until the degree has been granted. 
- Prospective applicants should be aware that almost all of Juris Doctor students have completed a four-year degree.
- The median applicant accepted has an academic average of approximately 83%, with an LSAT score of 166 (93rd percentile). The academic average and LSAT score are weighted equally.

**II. Special Admission Categories**

2A) Discretionary Category - Some positions in first-year Law are available for discretionary applicants. This category enables the Admissions Committee to respond to special circumstances such as disability or special needs, financial disadvantage, membership in a historically disadvantaged group or any other factors.
- Applicants seeking admission in this category must have completed at least two years of undergraduate or equivalent studies leading toward a university degree.

2B) Indigenous Applicants - Applicants who self-identify as Canadian Aboriginal (including First Nations, Métis, or Inuit) may apply in the regular category or in the Indigenous category. Indigenous applicants should contact the Associate Director of Indigenous Legal Studies as early as possible to discuss your application process.
- Applicants seeking admission in this category must have one of the following to be eligible for selection:
    - Undergraduate degree from a university
    - 3 years (minimum 90 credits) from a university (30 credits at the senior-level)

Note: Applicants are prioritized if they are involved with or committed to Indigenous communities and organizations, and intend to use their legal training to advance Indigenous concerns/interests.

Indigenous applicants must submit the same documents as General applicants, plus:
- Personal statement (essay)
- Two letters of reference
- Evidence of Indigeneity (including a photocopy of documents that support your self-identification) 

Academic Admission Requirement


1. As general applicants, you must submit the following in addition to submitting an online application to UBCV:
    - Undergraduate transcripts
    - LSAT score
    - Personal statement (questions)

2. Discretionary applicants must submit the same documents as General applicants, plus:
    - Two letters of reference
    - Documents that support any special circumstances (including a personal statement/essay)


Additional Academic Admission Requirement

1. For entry to the first year of Law study, you must submit an online application form by December. 

2. In addition to submitting an online application to UBCV, you must submit:
    - Personal statement (questions or essay)
    - Transcripts
    - Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) score
    - Two reference letters (if necessary)
    - Other documentation (if necessary)

3. The requirements of the personal statement and supporting documents are different for applicants in the General and Special categories. 

4. Admission is competitive. Meeting the entrance requirements does not guarantee admission. 

5. You may apply to enter the Juris Doctor program as an upper-year student, if you are already studying law in Canada, if you have graduated from a foreign law school, or as part of a joint education agreement between your school and the Allard School of Law.

Admission Advice

For First-Year entry, applications are open from September to December. All supporting documents are due early December. The LSAT deadline is January.
