The Doctor of Dental Medicine Degree prepares you to practise as a dentist with a high degree of technical skill. The curriculum is a hybrid of problem-based learning (PBL) and more traditional lectures and clinical experiences, with an emphasis on self-directed student learning and problem solving in small group settings. In the first year of study, you'll learn basic psychomotor skills in simulation and then apply them in supervised practice with patients while you continue to develop more complex skills in simulation. Clinical and patient management skills are developed through participation in integrated group practices of 2nd, 3rd and 4th year students managed by faculty members.

1. Completion of three academic years (90 undergraduate credits) at UBCV or the equivalent

2. Completion of appropriate pre-requisite courses in the subject areas of English, Chemistry, Biology, Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry
    - Note: Pass/Fail grades will not be accepted. 

3. ALL college/university course work, including failed courses (70% average or 2.8 GPA)

Academic Admission Requirement

1. Personal statement detailing why you wish to pursue a career as a dentist

2. Completion of the Canadian Dental Association Dental Aptitude Test (DAT) within the last four years (scores from no later than a July 1st writing in the year of your application)

3. Interview (for short-listed applicants)

Additional Academic Admission Requirement

1. Applications are accepted through ADEA AADSAS Online Application OR directly through the UBCV Faculty of Dentistry Online Application. If you plan to apply to more than one dental school, it will be in your benefit to apply through AADSAS.

2. If your education was completed in a country where the primary official language is not English, you must meet the English proficiency requirements through one of the acceptable English language proficiency tests.

3. If applicable, proof of Canadian residency must be uploaded through the AADSAS online application with a copy of either your Canadian Passport, Canadian Citizenship Certificate, Canadian Permanent Resident Card or Canadian Birth Certificate. 

4. Dental shadowing is not required, however, it is highly recommended to have at least 30 hours of dental shadowing experience at the time of application. 

5. Admission to the dental program is based primarily on academic ability and personal qualities as evidenced by pre-dental scholastic records, aptitude tests, individual interviews, group interviews, in addition to a global assessment of the application and applicant’s fit to the program. Fulfillment of the minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance. The number of qualified applicants exceeds the number of available positions. Not every qualified applicant will be offered admission.

6. Short-listed applicants will be invited to the Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) Admissions Interview on the basis of their application, including cognitive and global parameters. A $150.00 fee applies to candidates who will be invited for interview. Applicants not invited to the interview will not be considered further.

7. Accepted students will have two weeks from the date of their letter of acceptance to pay a non-refundable tuition deposit.

8. Successful applicants must submit a health record with proof of immunizations (Tetanus/Diptheria-Toxoid, Polio, MMR, Chickenpox, Hepatitis B) and a negative TB skin test (if the test is positive a chest x-ray is required) to UBCV Health Services. Immunizations are available from family doctors, local Public Health Unit and Student Health Services at UBCV. Those who are carriers of one of the above conditions may restrict both their educational opportunity to earn competency for graduation and their ability to practice as a dentist.

9. The Faculty of Dentistry is not accepting applications from graduates of international dental programs to the International Dental Degree Completion Program (IDDP) at this time until further notice. Internationally-trained dentists holding Canadian Citizenship or valid permanent residency permits in Canada are eligible to apply to the 4-year Doctor of Dental Medicine program provided all admissions requirements are met.

10. The Faculty of Dentistry considers applications to the Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) program from individuals who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada. Applicants must fulfill the stated admission requirements for the program of study, as well as any Canadian immigration student visa requirements (note that there are special student visa requirements for international students entering a health care program, and applicants should review the Canadian Immigration website).

Admission Advice

The Doctor of Dental Medicine program application for the (graduating) Class of 2028 will open on May 9, 2023 with submissions open May 30, 2023. The deadline for fully documented applications is October 10, 2023.

Canadian and American DAT scores will be accepted no later than the July 1, 2023 sitting of the Canadian DAT.
