The Respiratory Therapy (RT) Diploma teaches you the latest in respiratory care theory and provides you with the active, hands-on laboratory experience you need to succeed as a respiratory therapist - a licensed health-care professional specializing in cardiopulmonary care. With four program options to choose from, you can complete your RT diploma in two to three years or choose to advance your education with dual credentials in respiratory therapy and a Bachelor of Health Science or a Master of Education.

1. High school graduation (C+ average) or equivalent
2. English 12 (73%) or equivalent
3. Pre-calculus 12 (C+) or equivalent
4. Biology 12 (C+) or equivalent
5. Chemistry 12 (C+) or equivalent
6. Physics 11 (C+) or equivalent

Note: admission prerequisites should preferably have been obtained within five years of application.

Academic Admission Requirement

1. The following will be required, if accepted into the program:
-attend the program Information Session (Contact resp@tru.ca for more details)
-completed CPR Level C with AED Certificate 
-complete an immunization forms (forms will be emailed to you)
-provide proof of a successful Criminal Record Check

Additional Academic Admission Requirement

1. Out-of-the-province students can click here to see Canadian secondary school course equivalencies for admission prerequisites. 

2. If your high school or post-secondary education was not completed in Canada (regardless of residency or citizenship), you are required to complete the following:

-TOEFL, IELTS or the Language Proficiency test (see TRU's English Language Proficiency Requirements for Academic Study)
-An assessment of your credentials by an international credential assessment agency

3. Entry into the Respiratory Therapy program is competitive and selective. There are limited number of seats in the Respiratory Therapy program streams. Meeting the minimum requirements does not guarantee admission into the program. 

4. Seats for high school applicants are limited. It is recommended that you have 1 to 2 years of post-secondary study in a Bachelor of Science program prior to applying to this program. 

5. If you have completed a degree (in particular a Bachelor of Science Degree) within the last 5 years, you have the option of fast-track admission for entering into the second year of the Respiratory Therapy Diploma. Fast-track admission requirements are ranked and selected for acceptance according to the following:

-CGPA of the last 60 credits of your undergraduate degree
-The number of years required to complete the degree
-The number of successfully completed science courses
-The correlation between your first-year diploma courses and your undergraduate degree courses (biology, statistics, physics, English, etc.)

Applications are open on October 1 and must be submitted by February.

The supporting document deadline, including high school and post-secondary transcripts, is the same date as the application deadline or within 10 days of submission of the application.
