The Health Sciences (EMS) Diploma is designed for individuals new to the health care field as well as working paramedics and paramedics looking to advance to the Advanced Care Paramedic level. Most students complete the Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) program component of the diploma first. In the PCP program, emergency medicine skills are mastered through independent study, hands-on practice, and ambulance and hospital placements. After PCP program completion, many students become licensed at the PCP level and work as paramedics while finishing the remaining online courses in the diploma. Topics addressed range from anatomy and disease pathophysiology to research methods and conflict resolution.

1. One of:
    - High school graduation or equivalent
    - Mature student status (i.e. at least 21 years of age) 
2. English 12 (C) or equivalent
3. Math 11 (C) or equivalent
4. Biology 11 (C+)  or equivalent

Academic Admission Requirement

1. Current Emergency Medical Responder Certification (PCP, ACP and ITT Practitioners must provide proof of completion of the higher level of certification to be exempt from this requirement)

2. One of:
    - Completed Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) Certificate
    - Completion of admission requirements for the PCP Certificate

Additional Academic Admission Requirement

1. All applicants require Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) or higher-level certification as a program prerequisite. If you do not have Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) Certification, you can take it at JIBC. See JIBC's 15-day EMR program. 

2. The 60-credit Health Sciences Diploma at JIBC includes the following two components:
    - Primary Care Paramedic component (30 credits; an 8-month Certificate delivered online and in-person) 
    - Academic component (30 credits; delivered fully online)

3. If you do not have Primary Care Paramedic (PCP) Certificate or equivalent, you must submit a separate application to JIBC's PCP program. The PCP component has additional admission requirements (detailed on the PCP program profile), which are not covered in the list above. It is recommended that you secure a seat in the PCP program before submitting your application to the Health Sciences Diploma program. 

4. If you are missing academic entrance requirements, you have the option of taking upgrading courses. 

5. This program is open for international students, however, students may not be eligible for a Post-Secondary Study Permit or the Post-Graduation Work Permit according to the criteria determined by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. International applicants interested in this program are encouraged to visit the International Studies page or contact JIBC's Office of International Affairs.
