The Firefighting Technologies Certificate is ideal for people who want the essential training and certification to become a firefighter. You will gain the specialized knowledge and applied skills needed to be proficient and qualified within the "National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1001 Standard for Firefighter Professional Qualifications." You will complete the Hazardous Materials courses at JIBC and receive certification for their "NFPA 472 Standard for Competence of Responders to Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents."

1. High school graduation or equivalent 
2. English 12 (C) or equivalent

Academic Admission Requirement

1. Be at least 18 years old by the start date of the program
2. Basic First Aid (minimum 8 hours) with CPR Level C Certificate 
3. One of (Proof of Physical Ability):
    - West Coast Kinesiology and Physiotherapy
    - Fitness Assessment Test from a University (for example: UBC, UVic, UofT etc) that measures strength, speed, power, flexibility, cardiovascular endurance, aerobic capacity, body composition, and task-specific hand-eye coordination
    - Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT) (due to Covid-19, CPAT offerings may be suspended)
    - Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (external link) 
    - Doctor's note indicating that you are fit to undertake firefighter training 

Additional Academic Admission Requirement

1. Previous community volunteer work and fluency in an additional language other than English are beneficial prerequisites for this program.

2. This program is open for international students, however, students may not be eligible for a Post-Secondary Study Permit or the Post-Graduation Work Permit according to the criteria determined by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. International applicants interested in this program are encouraged to visit the International Studies page or contact JIBC's Office of International Affairs.

Admission Advice

There is a maximum of four intakes each year, including one part-time offering each year. Classes will run only if there are a minimum number of students.
