To work as a therapist and use the title Registered Marriage and Family Therapist (RMFT) in B.C., you must become a member of the B.C. branch of the Canadian Association for Couple and Family Therapy (CACFT). Eligibility is achieved by joining the B.C. branch after already being CACFT member. 

Please note that this certification is only required to work as a RMFT.

To work as a therapist in B.C., you may choose to register with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors. Eligibility is achieved by providing evidence of your academic credentials and work experience, as well as references.

Therapists in counselling and related specialized therapies

Confirm with the certifying body that your intended program qualifies you for this certification.

To work as an educational counsellor in B.C., you may need a Certificate of Qualification in Teaching. Eligibility is achieved through meeting requisite education requirements, including a teacher education program.

To work as career development practitioner or career counsellor in B.C., you may choose to earn the Certified Career Development Practitioner (CCDP) designation. Eligibility is achieved through a combination of graduation from a recognized educational program and work experience.

Educational counsellors

This instructional program class comprises any program that focuses on understanding elements of traumatic exposure, trauma-sensitive care, and crisis intervention. These programs include courses in disaster response, grief and loss counselling, crisis intervention and management, trauma counselling, neurobiology of trauma, PTSD and combat-related trauma, relational trauma and treatment of trauma-related disorders.

Trauma Informed Practice Micro-credentials

Therapists in counselling and related specialized therapies assist individuals and groups of clients to identify, understand and overcome personal problems and achieve personal objectives. They can be specialized to work on specific problems and they may practice psychotherapy. They are employed by counselling centres, social service agencies, group homes, government agencies, family therapy centres, and educational, health care and rehabilitation facilities, or they may work in private practice.

Educational counsellors advise current and prospective students on educational issues, career planning and personal development, and coordinate the provision of counselling services to students, parents, teachers, faculty and staff. They are employed by school boards and post-secondary educational institutions.

This 60-hour Trauma-Informed Practice Micro-credential is designed to provide you with an understanding of trauma and its impact on individuals and communities. You will engage in activities that promote resiliency and personal growth while exploring the critical link between trauma and wellness. A focus will be on communicating with empathy and understanding and creating safe and supportive environments. The wellness wheel and active and reflective listening will be explored to reflect on connections between trauma and mental, physical and emotional wellness. You will acquire the knowledge and skills to advocate for trauma-informed practice improvements in their workplaces and communities.
