This instructional program class comprises any program that focuses on the principles and practice of teaching English to students who are not proficient in English or who do not speak, read or write English, and that prepares individuals to function as teachers and administrators in such programs.

Teaching English as a second or foreign language/ESL language instructor

Teaching English Language Learning Programs

University professors and lecturers teach courses to undergraduate and graduate students and conduct research at universities. University professors who are heads of departments are included in this unit group.

Post-secondary teaching and research assistants assist university professors, community college and CEGEP teachers and other faculty members in teaching and research activities at universities and colleges.

College and other vocational instructors teach applied arts, academic, technical and vocational subjects to students at community colleges, CEGEPs, agricultural colleges, technical and vocational institutes, language schools and other college level schools. This unit group also includes trainers who are employed by private training establishments, companies, community agencies and governments to deliver internal training or development courses. College teachers who are heads of departments are included in this unit group.

Secondary school teachers prepare and teach academic, technical, vocational or specialized subjects at public and private secondary schools. Secondary school teachers who are heads of departments are included in this unit group.

Elementary school and kindergarten teachers teach basic subjects such as reading, writing and arithmetic or specialized subjects such as English or French as a second language at public and private elementary schools.

Elementary and secondary school teacher assistants support students, and assist teachers and counsellors with teaching and non-instructional tasks. They assist in areas of personal care, teaching and behaviour management under the supervision of teachers or other child care professionals. They are employed in public and private elementary, secondary and special needs schools and treatment centres.

The Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) Certificate is for students who want a concentrated study of teaching and tutoring English as an additional language. Classes are offered in the hybrid format, in one intensive semester of study. Students gain practical knowledge in teaching language, designing and delivering courses, and managing a classroom. The program includes a 25-hour practicum.

By the end of your studies, you’ll be ready to apply for the TESL Canada Standard Level One certification (if you have a bachelor’s degree). This certification is an important step in being able to teach English as an additional language in Canada and can make you a competitive candidate if you choose to teach abroad.   

Teaching English as a Second Language Certificate

The Teaching ESL Linguistics Certificate is intended for students seeking an introduction to the theory behind the practice of teaching of English as a second language (TESL). The program emphasizes an understanding of a wide range of concepts from linguistics and applied linguistics. Successful completion of a 30-hour practicum in an adult ESL program is also required. The program constitutes basic preparation for teaching English language skills to adult learners, though does not allow the holder to teach in the K-12 system. The certificate also provides preparation for further studies in applied linguistics and TESL. Those pursuing a long-term career in ESL should plan to take more advanced studies upon completion.

The Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) Certificate gives you the knowledge, skills and confidence to start a career teaching English as a second or additional language in Canada or around the world. The program is five courses long, including one supervised practicum. Our program is nationally accredited by TESL Canada.

Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) Certificate program has two options: TESL Coursework Certificate (12 credits) and TESL Certificate with Practicum (15 credits). They are designed for pre- and in-service teachers and those who are interested in teaching local and international students in Canada or overseas.

When you graduate from the Teaching English as a Second Language certificate, you have the skills to teach English to non-native speakers and are eligible to apply for TESL Canada Professional Standard Two certification. You'll learn the latest techniques from experienced faculty and get valuable teaching practice both in class and during a supervised practicum. All UFV TESL courses are offered online, so you can take classes even if you are working or finishing your degree. You can complete the Teaching English as a Second Language courses in two semesters. Four classroom sessions per semester — scheduled in early evenings

Teaching English as a Foreign Language Micro-certificate

 Designed for BC teachers working in K-12 classrooms, the Micro-certificate in Teaching English Language Learning includes two required non-credit asynchronous online courses. Although the two courses can be taken in any order, we recommend you begin with the Principles of Teaching English Language Learning course and learn about the general sociological, psycholinguistic and educational principles involved in teaching students for whom English is not their first language. Then build on this foundational knowledge with Organization and Procedures for Instruction of English to Second Language Learners—where you’ll learn to apply the language learning principles covered in the first course and how to integrate language learning and content area instruction.
