To work as a Health Care Assistant in B.C., you must register with the B.C. Care Aide and Community Health Worker Registry. Eligibility is achieved by successfully completing a recognized HCA program.

Home support workers, caregivers and related occupations

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to provide routine care and assistance to patients under the direct supervision of other health care professionals, and/or to perform routine maintenance and general assistance in health care facilities and laboratories.

Health aide

Supportive Care Assistant Micro-credentials

Home support workers, caregivers and related occupations, provide personal care and companionship for seniors, persons with disabilities and convalescent clients. They provide care in the client's residence, where they may also reside. They are employed by home care and support agencies, private households, or they may be self-employed.

Students will explore key challenges such as mental health, neurodiversity, memory care, grief and loss, depression, and creating a supportive workplace. The program prepares you to provide care for residents with mental health challenges, dementia, and neurodiversity, while strengthening communication with families to improve safety and well-being. 

Applied Long Term Care Practitioner Micro-credential

The Supportive Care Assistant Micro-credential is designed to rapidly train new workers for the long-term care sector. Supportive Care Assistants work within health care teams to support clients. Learners complete six weeks of training followed by a paid non-clinical work experience placement. In their placements, learners perform non-clinical activities to support those working and those living in long-term care. The program allows learners to discover a new career, gain work experience and make a difference in their community. You will be immersed in topics such as professionalism, their role within the interprofessional team, respect for clients and families, and providing client and family-centered supports. You will also study inclusive practice skills when interacting with clients, families, and interprofessional team members; how to provide personal support assistance techniques; and the chain of infection as it relates to disease transmission and prevention.

Supportive Care Assistant Micro-credential

The Supportive Care Assistant Award of Achievement is designed to prepare students for entry level non-clinical employment opportunities in long-term and home care sectors and includes training in professionalism, client and family centred care, communication, supportive assistance, and safety/infection control.
