To work as a therapist and use the title Registered Marriage and Family Therapist (RMFT) in B.C., you must become a member of the B.C. branch of the Canadian Association for Couple and Family Therapy (CACFT). Eligibility is achieved by joining the B.C. branch after already being CACFT member. 

Please note that this certification is only required to work as a RMFT.

To work as a therapist in B.C., you may choose to register with the BC Association of Clinical Counsellors. Eligibility is achieved by providing evidence of your academic credentials and work experience, as well as references.

Therapists in counselling and related specialized therapies

Confirm with the certifying body that your intended program qualifies you for this certification.

To work as an educational counsellor in B.C., you may need a Certificate of Qualification in Teaching. Eligibility is achieved through meeting requisite education requirements, including a teacher education program.

To work as career development practitioner or career counsellor in B.C., you may choose to earn the Certified Career Development Practitioner (CCDP) designation. Eligibility is achieved through a combination of graduation from a recognized educational program and work experience.

To work as a social worker in B.C., you may choose to become certified through the B.C. College of Social Workers (BCCSW). Eligibility is achieved through completion of an approved post-secondary program, criminal record checks, and successful writing of a licensure exam.

Social and community service workers

Confirm with the certifying body that your intended program qualifies you for this certification.

To work as a Health Care Assistant in B.C., you must register with the B.C. Care Aide and Community Health Worker Registry. Eligibility is achieved by successfully completing a recognized HCA program.

Home support workers, caregivers and related occupations

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to help prevent substance abuse, counsel individuals and families with drug and alcohol problems, and perform intervention and therapeutic services for persons suffering from addiction. These programs include courses in individual and group counselling skills, psychology of addiction, sociology, crisis intervention, substance abuse identification methodologies, substance abuse treatment modalities, substance abuse prevention and treatment resources, pharmacology and behavioural aspects of abused substances, treatment evaluation, patient observation and education, group dynamics, professional standards and ethics, and applicable laws and regulations.

This instructional program class comprises any program not listed above that relates to Mental and social health services and allied professions.

Mental Health Micro-credentials

Therapists in counselling and related specialized therapies assist individuals and groups of clients to identify, understand and overcome personal problems and achieve personal objectives. They can be specialized to work on specific problems and they may practice psychotherapy. They are employed by counselling centres, social service agencies, group homes, government agencies, family therapy centres, and educational, health care and rehabilitation facilities, or they may work in private practice.

Educational counsellors advise current and prospective students on educational issues, career planning and personal development, and coordinate the provision of counselling services to students, parents, teachers, faculty and staff. They are employed by school boards and post-secondary educational institutions.

Social and community service workers administer and implement a variety of social assistance programs and community services, and assist clients to deal with personal and social problems. They are employed by social service and government agencies, mental health agencies, group homes, shelters, substance abuse centres, school boards, correctional facilities and other establishments.

Home support workers, caregivers and related occupations, provide personal care and companionship for seniors, persons with disabilities and convalescent clients. They provide care in the client's residence, where they may also reside. They are employed by home care and support agencies, private households, or they may be self-employed.

The Mental Health and Substance Use Level 1 Micro-certificate provides a comprehensive understanding of mental health and substance use at a foundational level. It is targeted to frontline service providers, aiming to enhance their ability to work effectively and ethically with individuals experiencing mental health and substance use challenges.
