To work as a consultant, officer or researcher related to sport, recreation or fitness in B.C., you may choose to register as a member with the British Columbian Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA). Contact the association to initiate the membership process. 

Recreation, sports and fitness policy researchers, consultants and program officers

To work as a coach in B.C., you may need to complete the National Coaching Certification Program specific to your sport or activity. Certification requirements vary depending on the sport and level you wish to coach.

To work as a payroll administrator in B.C., you may choose to register as a member with the National Payroll Institute (NPI). The NPI offers a range of professional membership options, available to you depending on the stage of your payroll compliance practitioner (PCP) education journey.

Coaches

To work as a ski instructor in B.C., you may need to be registered with the Canadian Ski Instructors' Alliance (CSIA). Eligibility is achieved by passing each of the four levels of Instructor Certification and a Trainer Designation.

To work as a personal trainer in B.C., you may need to have Personal Trainer Certification through the BC Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA). Eligibility is achieved by completing a core specialty prerequisite, completion of an advanced specialty module, a specialty exam, and completion of an instructor competency evaluation.  

Program leaders and instructors in recreation, sport and fitness

This instructional program class comprises any scientific program that focuses on the anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and biophysics of human movement, and applications to exercise and therapeutic rehabilitation. These programs include courses in biomechanics, motor behaviour, motor development and coordination, motor neurophysiology, performance research, rehabilitative therapies, the development of diagnostic and rehabilitative methods and equipment, and related analytical methods and procedures in applied exercise and therapeutic rehabilitation.

To work as a kinesiologist in B.C., you may choose to register with the Canadian Kinesiology Alliance. Eligibility is achieved by becoming a member of the provincial kinesiologist association and meeting academic requirements.

Eligibility is achieved by completing an approved four-year degree in kinesiology in Canada, and by meeting the academic, work experience, and continuing professional development standards set by the certifying body.

To work as a cardiopulmonary technologist in B.C., you may choose to be certified through the Canadian Association of Cardio-pulmonary Technologists. Eligibility is achieved by completing a Bachelor of Science degree, or by being a Registered Nurse, or holding a recognized Medical Technologies Registration, in addition to a minimum of 1800 hours in the field of pulmonary technology at a recognized institution.

Policy researchers, consultants and program officers in recreation, sports and fitness oversee and administer recreation, sports and fitness programs and activities, provide consulting services, conduct research and develop programs and policies related to recreation, sports and physical fitness. They are employed by federal, provincial and municipal governments, recreation, sports, fitness and health care facilities, retirement homes, community centres, sports and fitness consulting firms and organizations, or they may be self-employed.

Coaches prepare and train individual athletes or teams for competitive events. They are employed by national and provincial sports organizations, professional and amateur sports teams, sports clubs and universities or they may be self-employed. This unit group also includes sports scouts who identify and recruit athletes for professional sports teams. They are employed by professional sports organizations.

Program leaders and instructors in recreation, sport and fitness lead and instruct groups and individuals in recreational, sports, fitness or athletic programs. Fitness appraisers conduct fitness tests and assessments and design, develop and deliver fitness programs. They are employed by community centres, sports and fitness clubs, outdoor centres, resorts, recreational facilities, health care facilities, retirement homes, correctional institutions, government departments, private businesses, tourism associations and similar establishments.

The Kinesiology Diploma prepares you to work as qualified exercise professionals. Students in this two-year diploma program study fitness principles, physical fitness training practices, exercise physiology, exercise testing and prescription, nutrition, health promotion, lifestyle management, stress management, growth and development and behavioural change through the standard program or the internship designation. The program prepares you to design and implement personalized exercise and physical activity programs and lifestyle education programs as personal trainers or other fitness professionals. Areas of study include the physiological, psychological and biomechanical foundations for physical fitness and movement education that also lead to healthy lifestyle behaviours.

Kinesiology Diploma

The Kinesiology Diploma offers training in how physical, social and psychological factors influence the health of people and their communities. In your first year, you'll develop your foundational knowledge with courses in active health planning, biomechanics, leadership, sport sociology and human physiology. You'll tackle more complex topics in year two, with training in exercise psychology, human motor skills and behaviour, mental theories in sport and more. Kinesiology is the study of the human body in motion and is a growing field that offers a variety of careers and educational opportunities. At the end if your second year, you can be eligible for Canadian Society for Exercise Physiology (CSEP) Personal Training certification. This program transfers into Kinesiology degree programs throughout Western Canada.

The Sport Science Diploma gives you an understanding of exercise physiology, nutrition, biomechanics, motor learning, sport psychology and more. This interdisciplinary program provides flexibility in career direction, with options to specialize in kinesiology or health and recreation. You'll also have the option to participate in a Co-operative Education program. The program will help prepare you for a career in coaching, teaching, health and fitness, leisure and sport administration, or exercise science.

The Kinesiology Diploma is a university-transfer program that allows you to continue toward the completion of a university degree in disciplines such as kinesiology, physical education, human kinetics, or other interdisciplinary studies.

After compelting the Human Kinetics Diploma program or equivalent, the Human Kinetics Diploma Pathway to BBA Degree allows you to take courses in different areas of business, such as Financial Accounting, Marketin, Management Principles, Computer Applications, Financial Management, Business Law, Organizational Behaviour, and more. This pathway consist of completing 26 courses.

The Kinesiology Diploma focuses on the skills that you can apply to a variety of career options in fitness, recreation, sport, education and health. You can choose to specialize in fitness, recreation, education, or general studies. Course credits transfer towards Bachelor degree programs in British Columbia and elsewhere. Upon graduation, you can become a recreation coordinator or certified personal trainer, or pursue further education.
