To work as an interior decorator in B.C., you may choose to register as a member with the Canadian Decorator's Association. Eligibility is achieved through completion of a certificate or diploma program from a recognized educational institution or significant work experience, a formal presentation and letters of reference. 

Interior decorators

This instructional program class comprises any program in the applied visual arts that prepares individuals to apply artistic principles and techniques to the professional planning, designing, equipping, and furnishing residential and commercial interior spaces. These programs include courses in computer applications drafting and graphic techniques; principles of interior lighting, acoustics, systems integration, and colour coordination; furniture and furnishings; textiles and their finishing; the history of interior design and period styles; basic structural design; building codes and inspection regulations; and applications to office, hotel, factory, restaurant and housing design.

To work as an interior designer with a protected title in B.C., you must register as a member with the Interior Designers Institute of British Columbia. Eligibility is achieved through completion of a bachelors degree in interior design followed by obtaining a prescribed amount of supervised work experience.

To work as an interior designer in B.C., you may choose to take the certification examination from the National Council for Interior Design Qualification. Eligibility is achieved through completion of a minimum of 60 interior design credit hours from an accredited post-secondary institution and work experience requirements that vary depending on the level of education attained.

Interior designers and interior decorators conceptualize and produce aesthetic, functional and safe designs for interior spaces in residential, commercial, cultural, institutional and industrial buildings. They are employed by architectural and interior design firms, retail establishments, construction companies, hospitals, airlines, hotel and restaurant chains, and other establishments, or they may be self-employed.

The Interior Design Fundamentals Certificate is the first year of the Interior Design program and serves as a foundation year that introduces students to the concepts and theories of interior design, with a focus on residential spaces.

Course content includes design theory, programming, analysis, concept development, space planning, lighting, colour theory and application, design history, materials and fabrics, residential construction drawing, sustainability & responsible environmental stewardship, written and oral communication skills, and visual communication – through both freehand and computer-generated drawings.
