To work as an instrumentation and control technician in B.C., you may need a SkilledTradesBC certification demonstrating that you have completed the necessary technical training and work experience part of your apprenticeship program. 

Industrial instrument technicians and mechanics

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to assemble, install, operate, maintain, and repair electrical/electronic equipment used in industry and manufacturing. These programs include courses in installing, maintaining and testing various types of equipment.

To practice as an electrical engineering technologist or technician in B.C., you may choose to register with Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia. Eligibility is achieved through completion of an accredited diploma program and 24 months of progressive work experience, 12 of which must be at the technologist profile or higher in a Canadian work environment.

To work as 'Telecommunications line and cable installers and repairers' and 'Telecommunications equipment installation and cable television service technicians' in B.C., you may need a SkilledTradesBC certification demonstrating that you have completed the necessary technical training and work experience part of your apprenticeship program.

Instrumentation Control Diplomas

Industrial instrument technicians and mechanics repair, maintain, calibrate, adjust, and install industrial measuring and controlling instrumentation. They are employed by pulp and paper processing companies, nuclear and hydro power generating companies, mining, petrochemical and natural gas companies, industrial instrument and other manufacturing companies, and by industrial instrument servicing establishments. Apprentices are also included in this unit group.

The Industrial Instrumentation and Process Control Technician program stresses practical, hands-on experience to complement theory. Students will learn how to apply, install, repair, calibrate and tune those measurement and control instruments that are used in industrial manufacturing processes.

Students will learn to program computerized control, programmable logic controllers, and microprocessor instrumentation and install and maintain all of the field instruments that these computerized controllers rely on. These job skills are essential for employment in instrumentation.

Half of the students’ time in the program is spent performing hands-on activities using the same equipment that is found in industry. The result is a very job-ready graduate, who can step into a position in one of many related fields.

Industrial Instrumentation and Process Control Technician Diploma

The Instrumentation and Electrtical Automation Technician Diploma allows you to blend industry practices and data management with technical expertise for various sectors. Gain skills in installing, programming, calibrating, and maintaining instrumentation, logic controllers and electrical systems for industrial automation in manufacturing and heavy industry. This training offers graduates pathways to Red Seal certification in electrical or instrumentation apprenticeship programs, or progression to advanced degrees in electrical engineering.
