To work as a refrigeration and air conditioning mechanic in B.C., you will need a SkilledTradesBC certification demonstrating that you have completed the necessary technical training and work experience part of your apprenticeship program.

Heating, refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to apply basic engineering principles and technical skills in support of engineers and other professionals engaged in developing and using air conditioning, refrigeration, ventilation, and heating systems. These programs include courses in principles of heating and cooling technology, design and operational testing, inspection and maintenance procedures, installation and operation procedures, and report preparation.

Heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration engineering technology/technician

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to repair, install, service and maintain the operating condition of heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration systems. These programs include courses in diagnostic techniques, the use of testing equipment and the principles of mechanics, electricity, and electronics as they relate to the repair of heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems.

Heating, air conditioning, ventilation and refrigeration maintenance technology/technician

Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) and Refrigeration Micro-credentials

Heating, refrigeration and air conditioning mechanics install, maintain, repair and overhaul residential central air conditioning systems, commercial and industrial refrigeration and air conditioning systems and combined heating, ventilation and cooling systems. They are employed by heating, refrigeration and air conditioning installation contractors, various industrial settings, food wholesalers, engineering firms and retail and servicing establishments. Transport refrigeration mechanics are included in this unit group. Apprentices are also included in this unit group.

This microcredential will introduce participants to the following concepts:
    - Sequence of operation of a heat pump system both mechanically and electrically
    - More complicated electrical wiring diagrams and how to interpret them
    - How to determine electrical and mechanical problems
    - How to detect and find refrigerant leaks and repair

Participants will also work on various systems used in the residential field.

Heat Pump Maintenance and Troubleshooting Micro-credential

The Residential Air to Air Heat Pump Specialist micro-credential will help you develop applied knowledge and skills — while learning from a team of industry instructors, and completing practical design and installation learning activities. This microcredential specifically incorporates emerging best practices and design considerations to ensure quality heat pump system installations that meet homeowner expectations, and provide heating and cooling during extreme weather events.

The Thermal Environmental Comfort Association (TECA), Home Performance Stakeholder Council (HPSC), and BCIT have partnered to ensure industry-relevant and current curriculum, informed by changing regulations, climate conditions, and lessons learned from the field. This microcredential will accelerate knowledge dissemination and support the industry shift towards high efficiency heating and cooling systems in residential buildings.

The Core Skills for Refrigeration Occupations Micro-credential is designed to provide information and introduce you to many aspects of legislation, refrigeration principles, terminology, psychrometric principles of refrigeration, construction trades and fluid pumps.  The course is divided into five modules, including videos, readings and assignments.
