Meteorologists and climatologists analyze and forecast weather, provide consultation on atmospheric phenomena and conduct research into the processes and phenomena of weather, climate and atmosphere. They are employed by all levels of government, natural resources and utility companies, the media and private consulting firms, or they may be self-employed.

Urban and land use planners develop plans and recommend policies for managing land use, physical facilities and associated services for urban and rural areas and remote regions. They are employed by all levels of government, land developers, engineering and other consulting companies, or may work as private consultants.

Government managers in health and social policy development and program administration plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate the development and administration of health care policies, social policies and related programs designed to protect and promote the health and social welfare of individuals and communities. They are employed by all levels of government.

The Bachelor of Technology in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) will teach you to use GIS software, hardware and peripheral devices, customize GIS software, develop and design GIS databases, analyze GIS data, write software to convert GIS data formats and write utility programs, use image analysis software and integrate images and other types of GIS information, discuss and use GIS theory to make decisions concerning GIS implementation, manage a GIS, train GIS users, implement and complete a GIS project, compare and discuss GIS software products. After graduation, you may work for either private industry (forestry, GIS vendors, natural resource exploration, computer systems) consulting companies (environmental, engineering, forestry, mapping, scanning, and software) or government agencies (municipal, provincial, federal). Graduates are developing GIS databases, using GIS to analyze data and predict the result of planned changes, managing GIS projects, planning the acquisition of GIS technology, developing GIS custom systems and training GIS users.

The Bachelor of Arts in Applied Geography is a unique, four-year Human Geography degree with an emphasis on the urban setting of human activity. The program is distinguished by the scope and sequencing of its skills development coursework. Required skills courses include those in qualitative methods, quantitative methods, geographic thought, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and research design. Graduates who complete the Bachelor of Arts, Major in Applied Geography program are able to comprehensively understand a range of contemporary urban issues and problems, and possess the practical skills to address them. They are engaged citizens, well-positioned for employment in occupations requiring knowledgeable people capable of working with diverse types of information, or for further, graduate study in Geography and related fields.

The Geography and Computer Science: Bachelor of Science Degree combines geography and computer science in the field of geomatics. Study GPS, satellite imagery, remotely sensed data, GIS and visualization tools. Learn how to collect, process, analyze and display data and use maps to improve our world.

In the Bachelor of Arts in Geography Degree, you'll study the interactions between people and the environment and examine the spatial nature of these relationships. This program will allow you to seek solutions to climate change, global migration and sustainability. Advanced studies focus on topics such as political, cultural, social, health, and economic geographies, as well as global migration, sustainability and resilience, urban and regional planning, activism and community-based planning, and community mapping. You have the option to get involved in community activities and mapping projects, and travel with our field schools.

In the Bachelor of Science in Geography Degree, you'll study the interactions between people and the environment and examine the spatial nature of these relationships. Advanced studies focus on topics such as advanced geographic information system applications, remote sensing, cartography, geomorphology, hydrology, climatology, biogeography, and landscape ecology. The Physical Geography and Earth and Ocean Sciences degree program is composed of a selected combination of courses from the Department of Geography and the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences. Students may complete this program in either the Faculty of Social Sciences or the Faculty of Science. Those choosing a Social Sciences degree should consult the Social Sciences Faculty Program Requirements; those choosing a Science degree should must consult the Science Faculty Program Requirements. With appropriate course selection, this program is intended to fulfill the Geoscientists Canada Knowledge Requirements for the Environmental Geoscience stream, which contribute the academic requirements for registration as a Professional Geoscientist (P.Geo.) through Engineers and Geoscientists British Columbia (EGBC). Students may contact either the School of Earth and Ocean Sciences or EGBC for a current list of course equivalents. EGBC academic requirements may be subject to change. EGBC has additional requirements for registration beyond academic requirements.

The Bachelor of Arts Degree in Geography is designed to broaden an understanding of physical and human geography. Theoretical and applied course work will strengthen communication skills in oral, written and visual presentations, and provide a range of transferable skills, notably in the areas of socio-spatial analysis, remote sensing, and geographic information systems (GIS). You will be challenged to think critically, analyze problems, and seek resolutions to social-environmental conflicts.
