Senior managers in construction, transportation, production and utilities plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate, through middle managers, the overall operations of goods production, utility, transportation and construction companies. They formulate policies which establish the direction to be taken by these companies, either alone or in conjunction with other members of a board of directors. They work in establishments throughout the following industries: fishing, forestry, logging and agriculture; mining, oil and gas extraction; construction; transportation and warehousing; printing; manufacturing; and utilities or they may own and operate their own business.

Engineering managers plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate the activities of an engineering department, service or firm. They are employed by a wide range of private sector and government establishments and by consulting engineering and scientific research companies.

Other professional engineers include agricultural and bioresource engineers, biomedical engineers, engineering physicists and engineering scientists, marine and naval engineers, textile engineers and other specialized engineering occupations.

Engineering inspectors and regulatory officers inspect transportation vehicles such as aircraft, watercraft, automobiles and trucks and weighing and measuring devices such as scales and meters as well as industrial instruments, processes and equipment for conformity to government and industry standards and regulations. They are employed by government agencies and in the private sector.

The Environmental Engineering Joint UNBC/UBCV program is a 4.5-year (nine semester) joint degree between UBCV and the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC). If you are interested in engineering, and in preserving our natural environment, then Environmental Engineering could be for you. Environmental engineering is the application of science and engineering principles to improve air, land, water, and living systems for a healthy environment.

The Bachelor of Applied Science Degree in Engineering foundation year prepares you with a strong knowledge base from which to build a solid and rewarding academic and professional career. Along with other first-year engineering students, you’ll take courses in math, chemistry, physics and communication to gain the fundamental knowledge you need to succeed as an engineer. You'll take two engineering classes where you’ll learn how to use your problem-solving and critical-thinking skills to solve real-world problems and challenges. Weekly design studios allow you to apply the knowledge you are using in your other core classes to work on engineering design projects, before applying to your specialization for the rest of your studies.

The Bachelor of Applied Science Degree (BASc) in Environmental Engineering at UBC and UNBC features all aspects of environmental engineering with a focus on sustainable development, drinking water delivery to northern communities, wastewater management, and remediation and reclamation of resource extraction sites. You'll gain communication skills and an interdisciplinary approach in addition to knowledge of environmental engineering, and have the opportunity to participate in a co-op program. Upon graduation, you'll be prepared to work as an environmental engineer.
