This instructional program class comprises any general program that focuses on the English language, including its history, structure and related communications skills; and the literature and culture of English-speaking peoples.

English Bachelor's Degrees

Editors review, evaluate and edit manuscripts, articles, news reports and other material for publication, broadcast or interactive media and coordinate the activities of writers, journalists and other staff. They are employed by publishing firms, magazines, journals, newspapers, radio and television networks and stations, and by companies and government departments that produce publications such as newsletters, handbooks, manuals and Web sites. Editors may also work on a freelance basis.

The Bachelor of Arts, Major in English program focuses on the diverse literatures of the English-speaking world, including the full range of British, Canadian, and American literary traditions, diasporic literature and literature in translation, oral and written Indigenous narratives, and classic and contemporary film. This degree will allow students to develop the knowledge, core competencies, and skills characteristic of a traditional Bachelor of Arts program, while preparing them to respond critically and creatively to a wide range of issues and challenges in our community and in society in general. In addition to critical reading, writing and thinking skills, students who complete a Bachelor of Arts in English will be prepared for entry into the labour market through the incorporation of essential employability skills into all of our courses.

English: Bachelor of Arts Degree (BA)

In the Bachelor of Arts Degree in English, you'll study the world and its many cultures by reading and analyzing literature. You'll learn to craft and take apart arguments while taking courses in literary classics, literature and culture, history of literary criticism, metrics and prosody, and more. Upon graduation, you'll be prepared to work in fields such as advertising, communications, publishing, public relations, and more, or pursue further education.

The Bachelor of Arts, English, allows you to focus on the study and analysis of literature, both contemporary and classical. Sharpen your writing, composition, and public speaking abilities. With your passion for the written word, and curiosity of humanity’s vast literary expression, deepen your own understanding of the English language. In a curriculum that spans time and traverses the globe, you will study literary conventions, genres, traditions, and the functions of literature in many forms, which could include Indigenous knowledge and ways.

The Bachelor of Arts in English allows you to study poetry and drama from the Renaissance, Victorian and modern eras, along with a look at Canadian literature. Courses in composition, the humanities, math or science, and social sciences round out this degree.

English: Bachelor of Arts Degree (BA) - Open Learning

The Bachelor of Arts in English involves the close study and analysis of complex texts. Themes ranging from composititon to Renaissance literature; from 17th, 18th, and 19th century studies to contemporary American and Canadian writing; and from Indigenous and postcolonial literature to studies in the emerging field of digital humanities. You can participate in co-op experience to support classroom learning and work experience related to your field of study.

The Bachelor of Arts Degree in English is about literature written in English from around the world – from the earliest medieval riddles to contemporary slam poetry. You’ll also have the opportunity to study the English language: its roots, its patterns, and its uses in politics and social media. If you’re an English major or honours student, you’ll encounter the past and present of imaginative literature and understand how our language makes meaning. You’ll gain advanced skills in reading and writing and learn to imagine and to understand cultures, to work in teams, to ask good questions, and to learn independently.  Upon graduation, you may find employment in secondary and post-secondary education, journalism, new media, technology, advertising, library sciences, government, politics, law, business, and not-for-profits.

In the English: Bachelor of Arts Degree you will engage in critical writing and analyses of Canadian, British, American and International literature in English. Craft your storytelling skills with classes in creative writing (fiction, poetry and non-fiction). The Bachelor of English degree encourages interdisciplinary learning through cultural studies and visual media, gender studies, literature and the environment, and animal studies. This program unites literary studies, creative writing, and film and television studies under one popular department.

The English: Bachelor of Arts Degree will develop your thinking, reading, and writing skills — skills that are highly sought after by employers and applicable in a wide range of fields from marketing and business administration to education, journalism, and research with UFV's Bachelor of Arts in English.

UFV’s English program provides you with the ability to articulate complex ideas and research findings and the skills to analyze various texts and interpret iconic written works throughout history. By the end of the program, you'll have developed an appreciation and in-depth understanding of the major genres, periods, movements, and authors throughout literary history. You'll have gained the transferrable skills — such as critical inquiry, evidence evaluation, and the ability to explore different perspectives and develop arguments — that make you qualified and confident to establish yourself in a variety of fields.

In the Bachelor of Arts in English Degree, you'll study literature from a variety of perspectives. Read everything from The Canterbury Tales and the Bible to science fiction and young adult novels. Improve your writing, analytical skills and understanding of literary traditions.

The Bachelor of Arts in English degree will increase your literary, cultural, and critical awareness, and help you develop the skills necessary to express your ideas effectively both orally and in writing. In addition to literary studies, courses in writing, rhetoric, and public speaking are offered. You will  be exposed to a wide range of literary studies, traditions, approaches and theoretical issues with an emphasis on establishing a clear grasp of major concerns in culture and literature.
