To practice as an industrial and manufacturing engineer in B.C., you must register with Engineers and Geoscientists B.C. Eligibility is achieved through graduation from an accredited program, 4 years of work experience as an Engineer-In-Training, and successful completion of the National Professional Practice Examination.

To work as an industrial engineering technologist, technician, or in a related occupation in B.C., you may choose to register with Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia. This career is eligible for Red Seal endorsement. When all levels of your trades training are complete, you can write an Interprovincial Red Seal exam. A successful result demonstrates you have met the national standard for your trade in Canada will allow you to practice your trade outside of BC in provinces and territories covered by the Red Seal certification.

This instructional program class comprises any program that generally prepares individuals to apply basic engineering principles and technical skills in support of engineers engaged in a wide variety of projects. These programs include courses in various engineering support functions for research, production, and operations, and applications to specific engineering specialties.

Engineering technology/technician, general

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to apply basic engineering principles and technical skills in support of architects, engineers and planners engaged in designing and developing buildings, urban complexes, and related systems. These programs include courses in design testing procedures, building site analysis, model building and computer graphics, engineering drawing, structural systems testing, analysis of prototype mechanical and interior systems, test equipment operation and maintenance, and report preparation.

Architectural engineering technology/technician

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to apply basic engineering principles and technical skills in support of engineers and other professionals engaged in developing, installing, calibrating, modifying and maintaining automated systems. These programs include courses in computer systems; electronics and instrumentation; programmable logic controllers (PLCs); electric, hydraulic and pneumatic control systems; actuator and sensor systems; process control; robotics; applications to specific industrial tasks; and report preparation.

Automation engineer technology/technician

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to apply basic engineering principles and technical skills to the identification and resolution of production problems in the manufacture of products. These programs include courses in machine operations, production line operations, engineering analysis, systems analysis, instrumentation, physical controls, automation, computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), manufacturing planning, quality control, and informational infrastructure.

Engineering Micro-credentials

Industrial and manufacturing engineers conduct studies, and develop and supervise programs to achieve the best use of equipment, human resources, technology, materials and procedures to enhance efficiency and productivity. They are employed in consulting firms, manufacturing and processing companies, in government, financial, health care and other institutions, or they may be self-employed.

Mechanical engineering technologists and technicians provide technical support and services or may work independently in mechanical engineering fields such as the design, development, maintenance and testing of machines, components, tools, heating and ventilating systems, geothermal power plants, power generation and power conversion plants, manufacturing plants and equipment. They are employed by consulting engineering, manufacturing and processing companies, institutions and government departments.

Industrial engineering and manufacturing technologists and technicians may work independently or provide technical support and services in the development of production methods, facilities and systems, and the planning, estimating, measuring and scheduling of work. They are employed by manufacturing and insurance companies, government departments, and establishments in other industries.

Machinists set up and operate a variety of machine tools to cut or grind metal, plastic or other materials to make or modify parts or products with precise dimensions. Machining and tooling inspectors inspect machined parts and tooling in order to maintain quality control standards. They are employed by machinery, equipment, motor vehicle, automotive parts, aircraft and other metal products manufacturing companies and by machine shops. Apprentices are also included in this unit group.

Supervisors in plastic and rubber products manufacturing supervise and coordinate the activities of workers who operate processing machines and who fabricate, assemble and inspect rubber or plastic products. They are employed by rubber and plastic products manufacturing companies and in plastic parts divisions of other manufacturing companies.

Other products assemblers, finishers and inspectors assemble, finish and inspect components or products of various materials, such as jewellery, silverware, buttons, pencils, non-prescription lenses, brushes, clocks and watches, musical instruments, sporting goods, toys, boats and other miscellaneous products. They are employed by a wide variety of manufacturing companies.

The Canadian Engineering Professional Practice microcredential is designed to provide trained engineers with the law and ethics education and communication skills to help them to excel in the engineering profession and successfully pursue professional licensure with one of Canada’s provincial or territorial engineering regulators.

Canadian Engineering Professional Practice Micro-credential

REVIT is a computer-aided design (CAD) program used in engineering, architecture, interior design, and other fields requiring a sophisticated design and drafting tool.  This eight-hour course will introduce you to the fundamentals of this powerful software.

REVIT 2023 BASICS MEP Micro-credential

In the Computer-Aided Design SolidWorks Engineering Micro-credential, you will be introduced to the principles of computer aided design. Case studies and sample problems will be used to elucidate these principles and conventions. The main software tool used in this course will be SOLIDWORKS, a common design tool used in Industrial design. You will participate in the design of an original solution that will be fabricated using 3D printers.

Computer-Aided Design SolidWorks Engineering Micro-credential

In the Engineering Management for RPT, you will be introduced to Engineering Project management with a focus on original product design utilizing rapid prototyping technology and modern planning tools. Topics such as management of intellectual property, risk, schedules, and program development costs will be discussed. Case studies and sample problems will be used to elucidate these principles and conventions. You will participate in the discussion and comparison of the strengths and weaknesses of management approaches.

Engineering Management for Rapid Prototyping Technology Engineering Micro-credential

The Rapid Prototyping Technology introduces modern rapid prototyping technology used for engineering design and manufacturing. You will learn about many new rapid prototyping technologies, such as 3D printers, casting techniques, laser cutters, computer controlled milling machines, and electronic circuit board technology. Case studies and sample problems will be used to elucidate these principles and conventions. Factors affecting the cost of using these technologies will be discussed.

Rapid Prototyping Technology Engineering Micro-credential

In the Fundamentals of Sustainable and Innovative Manufacturing Micro-credential, you'll combine hands-on skills with theoretical knowledge to give you a start in the growing sustainable manufacturing sector. Based at Alberni Valley Makerspace, you and your classmates will gain an introduction to six main modules (see courses) that cover the fundamentals you need to get a start in the field, including:

- Software
- Laser cutting and 3D printing
- Plastic recycling and manufacturing
- Woodworking
- Small electronics applications

As part of the curriculum, you’ll combine knowledge and skills gained throughout the program to create a functioning prototype as your capstone project.

Fundamentals of Sustainable and Innovative Manufacturing Micro-credential

The Integrated Design, Fabrication & Data Analysis in Advanced Manufacturing Micro-credential is a comprehensive 16-week program designed to equip early-career trades workers and mid-career industrial designers with advanced skills in digital manufacturing. It focuses on integrating digital tools into traditional manufacturing processes, enhancing your abilities in 2D and 3D design, computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) and data analysis within the context of Industry 4.0.

The Quantum Software Development Micro-credential is a collaborative initiative between the Quantum Algorithms Institute (QAI) and the office of Professional Programs and Development at the University of Victoria’s Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science (FECS). It will support individuals with a background in computer programming or related STEM backgrounds to acquire competencies in programming quantum computers with a view to enhancing employability in quantum-aligned or quantum-adjacent industries.
