Electrical and electronics engineering technologists and technicians may work independently or provide technical support and services in the design, development, testing, production and operation of electrical and electronic equipment and systems. They are employed by electrical utilities, communications companies, manufacturers of electrical and electronic equipment, consulting firms, and in governments and a wide range of manufacturing, processing and transportation industries.

Electronic service technicians service and repair household and business electronic equipment such as audio and video systems, computers and peripherals, office equipment and other consumer electronic equipment and assemblies. They are employed by electronic service and retail establishments, by wholesale distributors and within service departments of electronic manufacturing companies. Apprentices are also included in this unit group.

Electrical Engineering Certificates

The Electrical Power and Industrial Control option of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology (ECET) program offers students a foundation in the technology used in utility, industrial, commercial and residential applications. This two-year diploma program has an optional co-operative education component. Students will graduate with strong theoretical and practical, hands-on knowledge in many areas, including:
    - Power generation including renewable and conventional energy resources
    - Electric machines (motors and generators) and their controls
    - Power distribution design for utilities
    - Industrial electrical systems and lighting design according to the Canadian Electrical Code (CEC)
    - Measurement of power quality issues and how to solve them
    - Troubleshooting and operation of electrical power equipment including transformers and switchgear

Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology (Electrical Power and Industrial Control Option): Diploma

Building on the knowledge and skills gained in the first year of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology program, students learn the principles required to design, develop, manufacture, and test telecommunication systems and networks. The program covers land mobile radio systems, digital data transmission, fibre optic and microwave technology, satellite communications, radio frequency (RF) design, local and wide area networks (LANs and WANs), wireless networks, internet engineering technology, digital signal processing (DSP) techniques and the application of microcontrollers.  Students will also complete a student-initiated or industry-sponsored project.

The Telecommunications and Networks option is part of the specialty diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology.

Graduates of this option may obtain a dual diploma in another Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology option by completing all the additional required courses for that option. Entry to this second option is competitive and priority is given to students completing their first option.

Mechatronics and Robotics offers the integration of mechanical and electronic components, or mechatronics, and it is possible to design intelligent, reliable, versatile electromechanical systems such as industrial robots, medical devices, aircraft simulators, automated assembly lines, building control systems, and autonomous vehicles.

The Electrical Engineering Technology - Marine & Industrial Diploma has been designed to prepare you for employment in the Marine Sector and in the general Industrial Electrical field. This program shares the first year of the Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology - Renewable Energy program. Within the first year, you will learn the fundamental theories and skills necessary to proceed to more advanced industry-specific topics. Later on in the program, topics such as Electric Machines, Power Distribution, Control Theory, and others related to the electrical technology field will be presented. In addition, as an Electrical Engineering Technology—Marine & Industrial student, you have the option to supplement your classroom learning with the completion of up to three paid work terms.

The Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology - Renewable Energy Diploma will give you a broad knowledge of both electronics and computer engineering systems, which will enable you to embrace high technology in all its forms, and to support local industry in maintaining current products and systems and in creating the products of the future. At the same time, the program gives special emphasis to the technologies and control of renewable energy systems, a growth sector in Canada and around the world. You will get hands-on experience with leading edge systems and products and with industry standard development environments, which will facilitate a smooth transition into the workplace. If you choose to complete the co-op option, you'll complete a mix of academic and work terms.

Electronics and Computer Engineering Technology-Renewable Energy Diploma

The Mechatronics and Advanced Manufacturing Technology program prepares graduates for careers in the manufacturing industry. With growing reliance on automated technology in the manufacturing sector, technicians are being challenged to perform higher-level tasks that involve diagnostics, analytics, trouble-shooting and hands-on maintenance and repair. Students will acquire critical theoretical and technical knowledge, and hands-on practical experience in applied trades areas such as machining, welding, metal fabrication and electrical. In addition to these skills, students in this program will acquire the knowledge to enable them to prepare technical reports pertaining to the operation and management of an automated manufacturing facility.

Mechatronics and Advanced Manufacturing Technology Diploma

This Electronics Engineering Technology Diploma provides training in analog and digital electronic systems and equipment. The program places equal emphasis on a thorough understanding of circuit and system concepts/applications and proper techniques for building, testing and measuring circuits and systems. You'll learn about electronic circuits and system analysis and design. Explore electronic technology fields such as telecommunications, control systems, embedded systems and the industrial internet of things (IoT).You may find employment in the areas of communications, microcontroller applications, embedded system applications, systems control and automation.
