This instructional program class comprises any general program that focuses on the systematic study of the production, conservation and allocation of resources in conditions of scarcity, together with the organizational frameworks related to these processes. These programs include courses in economic theory, microeconomics and macroeconomics, comparative economic systems, money and banking systems, international economics, quantitative analytical methods, and applications to specific industries and public policy issues.

Economics Doctoral Degrees

Economists and economic policy researchers and analysts conduct research, monitor data, analyze information and prepare reports and plans to resolve economic and business problems and develop models to analyze, explain and forecast economic behaviour and patterns. They advise on matters such as finance, fiscal and monetary policy, international trade, agricultural and natural resource commodities and labour and industrial markets. They are employed by government departments and agencies and throughout the private sector in associations, unions, research organizations, banks and investment firms.

To work as a financial planner in B.C., you may choose to earn the Certified Financial Planner® certification through FP Canada. To obtain the CFP designation, candidates must complete a rigorous education program, pass a national exam, have a post-secondary degree and demonstrate three years of qualifying work experience. 

Employment as a financial manager additionally requires several years of related work experience.

To work as a financial analyst in B.C., you may choose to earn a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®) designation. You can earn the designation by completing the CFA® Program and acceptable work experience requirements.

To work as an investment manager in B.C., you may choose to earn the Chartered Investment Manager (CIM ®) designation. Eligibility for this designation is achieved through the completion of requisite courses and at least 2 years of relevant work experience.

Employment as a senior manager in financial, communications, and other business services may additionally require several years of related work experience. 

To work as an accountant in B.C., you may choose to earn the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation. Eligibility for this designation is achieved through the completion of a bachelor’s degree in any subject from a Canadian or international university and required prerequisite courses.

Employment as a financial manager additionally requires several years of related work experience.

To work as a financial planner in B.C., you may choose to earn the Certified Financial Planner® certification through FP Canada. To obtain the CFP designation, candidates must complete an education program, pass a national exam, have a post-secondary degree and demonstrate three years of qualifying work experience. 

To work as a treasury professional in B.C., you may choose to earn the Certified Treasury Professional (CTP) designation. Eligibility can achieved through a variety of combinations of work, education, and teaching experience, and by successful completion of an exam.

To work as a financial analyst in B.C., you may choose to earn a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA®) designation. You can earn the designation by completing the CFA® Program and meeting acceptable work experience requirements. 

To work as an investment manager in B.C., you may choose to earn the Chartered Investment Manager (CIM ®) designation. Eligibility for this designation is achieved through the completion of requisite courses and at least 2 years of relevant work experience.

To work as a financial planner in B.C., you may choose to become a member of the Canadian Institute of Financial Planning. Eligibility is achieved by following the steps on the Canadian Institute of Financial Planning website.

To work in the investment industry in B.C., you may choose to become a member of the Investment Funds Institute of Canada. Eligibility is achieved through employment at an eligible firm.

To sell regulated financial products in Canada, you must be licensed through the Canadian Securities Institute. Once educational, ethical and work experience licensing requirements have been met, the application for registration is handled by either your employer or, if you are working independently, by a sponsoring financial services firm.
