To work as a home child care provider in B.C., you may need to have basic first aid and CPR certification. Eligibility is achieved by completing a relevant course.

To work as a home child care provider in B.C., you are encouraged to register with the Child Care Resource and Referral office that's closest to you.

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to teach students that can range in age from infancy through eight years, depending on the school system and applicable regulations. Includes preparation to teach all relevant subject matter.

Early childhood educators plan, organize and implement programs for children between the ages of infancy and 12 years. Early childhood educator assistants provide care for infants and preschool- to school-age children under the guidance of early childhood educators. Early childhood educators and assistants lead children in activities to stimulate and develop their intellectual, physical and emotional growth and ensure their security and well-being. They are employed in child-care centres, day-care centres, kindergartens, agencies for exceptional children and other settings where early childhood education services are provided. Supervisors of early childhood educators and assistants are included in this unit group.

Home child care providers care for children on an ongoing or short-term basis. They care for the well-being and physical and social development of children, assist parents with child care and may assist with household duties. They provide care primarily in their own homes or in the children's homes, where they may also reside. They are employed by private households and child-care agencies, or they may be self-employed.

Early Childhood Education Certificates

The Early Learning and Care (ELC) Diploma is designed to provide learners with the knowledge, skills and values to create responsive and nurturing early learning experiences. The ELC program embraces the belief that children and families are competent and capable, and the program reflects this principle in our work with students and the community. Indigenous perspectives on supporting children and families, and connections to nature, land and place, as well as the impact of colonization and the residential school experience, are woven throughout the learning experience. Students learn how to support and strengthen children’s unique and complex identities within their particular contexts. The program incorporates a sociocultural perspective of early childhood education as identified by current research and contemporary discourses.

Early Learning and Care Diploma

The Early Childhood Care & Education (ECCE) Diploma gives you the competencies and knowledge required to work with children under the age of five in licensed preschools and childcare centres. Education courses in the diploma meet the requirements of the Early Childhood Educator Registry for the ECE Certificate to Practice; Infant/Toddler Certificate to Practice and/or the Special Needs Certificate to Practice. This diploma provides you with foundational knowledge in child development, inclusive practices and curriculum design through specialized early childhood care and education courses. Students who successfully complete an ECCE diploma can apply to the Bachelor of Early Childhood Care and Education Degree program.

Curriculum is based on current best practices in early learning and care, reflecting the changing needs of children and families in the 21st century. The program draws on the strengths of individual learners as it provides a model for supporting the development of dispositions and practices which can, in turn, be supported in working with young children and their families. ECEE prepares you to apply for a BC Early Childhood Educator Certificate in British Columbia.

Early Childhood Care and Education: Exceptionalities Diploma

The Early Childhood Care and Learning (ECCL) Diploma Program provides comprehensive practical skills and theoretical understanding in attachment theories, infant and toddler development, health, safety, and nutrition, family centered practice, administration and leadership, and advocacy. Graduates of the diploma can apply for a certificate to practice as an Infant/Toddler Educator and/or a Special Needs Educator from the Early Childhood Educator Registry in BC.

Early Childhood Care and Learning Diploma

The Infant and Toddler Diploma is awarded upon successful completion of an Early Childhood Education certificate or equivalent, and the required courses in the Infant/Toddler specialty program. The Infant/Toddler diploma is available blended or online on a part-time basis, providing the opportunity for you to work while going to school. If you choose to work as an Early Childhood Educator, you should: be caring and have the desire to make a difference in the lives of children, use Positive Guiding Strategies, and have strong communication skills with children and parents of various cultural backgrounds.

Early Childhood Education: Infant and Toddler Diploma

The Special Needs Educator Diploma is awarded upon successful completion of an Early Childhood Education certificate or equivalent, plus the required courses in the Special Needs Educator program. The program provides the opportunity for you to work while going to school. If you choose to work as an Early Childhood Educator, you should: be caring and have the desire to make a difference in the lives of children, use Positive Guiding Strategies, and have strong communication skills with children and parents of various cultural backgrounds.

Early Childhood Education: Special Needs Educator Diploma

The Early Childhood Education Diploma qualifies you to apply for two provincial licenses to practice as both an Early Childhood Educator and a Special Needs Educator. You’ll be prepared to work in provincially licensed preschool and child-care centres. You'll apply theory to reality through a practicum in an early childhood education setting, and work with children from newborns to eight years old both individually and in groups. You’ll learn how to manage a child-care setting, guide child development, communicate and collaborate with children and caregivers, and promote health and nutrition.

Early Childhood Education Diploma

The Indigenous Early Childhood Education (IECE) program at NVIT prepares graduates to be effective early childhood development workers by meeting provincial licensing, academic, community, and Indigenous standards. Offered in partnership with communities, the program involves local elders and knowledge keepers in its delivery, providing a unique focus on Indigenous content in both certificate and diploma pathways.

The Indigenous Early Childhood Education program (IECE) is designed to meet provincial licensing, academic standards, community and Indigenous standards to ensure NVIT graduates are successful and effective early childhood development workers in BC communities. The Indigenous Early Childhood Education programs are unique in that they are only delivered in partnership with communities. This ensures that communities have local elders and knowledge keepers involved with the delivery of programs.

The diploma program meets provincial certification and licensing standards for infant/toddler and special needs children. This program is designed to run eight months from the beginning of September to the end of April. Successful completion of this program allows graduates to work as supervisors in a variety of daycare settings, to work with children who have special needs and to work with infants and toddlers under three years of age.

The Early Childhood Care & Education Diploma is a two-year diploma that allows you to build on your ECCE certificate by specializing in early childhood education. You can focus on working collaboratively with families in the care of infants and toddlers, or on supporting children who need extra help.

The Early Childhood Education Diploma is a four-semester diploma program prepares students as early childhood educators to work in a variety of environments for the care and education of young children. The educational experience focuses on the collaborative skills of the early childhood educator and responsive relationships with children, their families, and the community. The program includes a balance of classroom theory, experiential learning, pedagogical documentation, and reflective practice assignments. Each semester, you will complete practice education in local childcare and early learning centers.
