To practice as a user support technician in B.C., you may choose to register with Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia. Eligibility is achieved through completion of an accredited diploma program and 24 months of progressive work experience, 12 of which must be at the technologist profile or higher in a Canadian work environment.

User support technicians

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to manage the computer operations and control the system configurations emanating from a specific site or network hub. These programs include courses in computer hardware and software and applications; local area (LAN) and wide area (WAN) networking; principles of information systems security; disk space and traffic load monitoring; data backup; resource allocation; and setup and takedown procedures.

Database Network Administration Certificates

Computer network technicians establish, operate, maintain and coordinate the use of local and wide area networks (LANs and WANs), mainframe networks, hardware, software and related computer equipment. Web technicians set up and maintain internet, extranet and intranet web sites and web server hardware and software, and monitor and optimize network connectivity and performance. They are employed in information technology units throughout the public and private sectors. Computer network technicians who are supervisors are included in this group.

User support technicians provide first-line technical support to computer users experiencing difficulties with computer hardware and with computer applications and communications software. They are employed by computer hardware manufacturers and retailers, software developers, in call centres and in information technology units throughout the public and private sectors. They are also employed by independent technical support companies or they may be self-employed.

The Applied Database Administration and Design Associate Certificate covers the specification, development and design of Database Management Systems, and provides the foundation for several business intelligence, BI tools. Through hands-on labs and exercises you'll be guided in best practices to implement administrative policies, security measures and develop plans for disaster recovery. After graduation, you'll be able to develop integrated database technologies to industry standards for scalable and secure Information Systems. This program is aimed at mature students with other post-secondary education and work experience looking to validate their knowledge, or those with connections to potential employers.

Applied Database Administration and Design: Associate Certificate (Part-time)

The Applied Network Administration and Design Associate Certificate is aimed at network administrators who set user policies, access and security to ensure systems and data are protected from loss, compromise or failure, and network designers who evaluate and select the appropriate hardware and operating system components to meet user and business needs. You'll acquire industry-standard network design skills using a variety of tools in labs and exercises. Instruction is provided by subject matter experts and local industry practitioners. Completion of the program will allow you to validate prior networking experience. 

Applied Network Administration and Design: Associate Certificate (Part-time)

The Network Administrator Technician (NAT) Associate Certificate provides you with an introduction to the field of computer networking. The program provides a solid foundation for an entry-level position in the information technology (IT) industry. Theory is combined with hands-on activities to introduce students to networking concepts and hardware. The Information Technology (IT) sector has many career paths and areas of expertise. This program may be for you if you are a part of an organization looking to assume some responsibility for Network Administration.
