To work as a Fire Protection Technician in B.C., you must be registered with the ASTTBC Fire Protection Certification Program. Eligibility is achieved by review and validation of an applicant’s education, training, and work experience as well as requiring completion of a professional practice and ethics examination.

To work as a home inspector in B.C., you need the correct certification for the type of work you will be performing. Eligibility is achieved by passing the requisite exam through the Home Inspector Licensing Regulation. 

To work as a construction inspector in B.C., you may choose to earn the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Certification. Eligibility is achieved through signing up with the Canada Green Building Council.



To work as a Construction Instructor in B.C., you may need to be registered with the BC Construction Safety Alliance. Eligibility is achieved by possessing a minimum of three years of construction field experience and conducting a Certificate of Recognition (COR®) health and safety student audit of one's company.

To work as an energy advisor in B.C., you must be registered with Natural Resources Canada. Eligibility is achieved by passing two qualification exams, the Foundation Level Exam and the Energy Advisor (House) Exam and be affiliated with an NRCan-licensed service organization.

To practice as an electronic service technician in B.C., you may choose to register with Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia. Eligibility is achieved through completion of an accredited diploma program and 24 months of progressive work experience, 12 of which must be at the technologist profile or higher in a Canadian work environment.

This career is eligible for Red Seal endorsement. When all levels of your trades training are complete, you can write an Interprovincial Red Seal exam. A successful result demonstrates you have met the national standard for your trade in Canada will allow you to practice your trade outside of B.C. in provinces and territories covered by the Red Seal certification.

To work as an electronic service technician in B.C., you may need a SkilledTradesBC certification demonstrating that you have completed the necessary technical training and work experience part of your apprenticeship program. 

Electronic service technicians (household and business equipment)

Confirm with the certifying body that your intended program qualifies you for this certification.

To practice as an aircraft instrument, electrical and avionics mechanics, technician or inspectors in Canada, you may need to receive an aircraft maintenance (AME) license from Transport Canada. Eligibility is achieved by completing an Transport Canada-approved AME basic training program, attaining the required amount of civil aviation maintenance work experience, and successfully writing the necessary technical and regulatory exams.

To work as an aircraft instrument, electrical, and avionics mechanic, technician, or inspector in B.C., you may choose to become certified through the Canadian Council for Aviation & Aerospace (CCAA). Eligibility is achieved through documenting competencies and submitting these to the CCAA.

Full licensing as an Aircraft instrument, electrical and avionics mechanics, technicians and inspectors requires work experience.

Elevator constructors and mechanics

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to install, operate, maintain, and repair electric apparatus and systems such as residential, commercial, and industrial electric-power wiring; and DC and AC motors, controls, and electrical distribution panels. These programs include courses in the principles of electronics and electrical systems, wiring, power transmission, safety, industrial and household appliances, job estimation, electrical testing and inspection, and applicable codes and standards.

Electrician

Construction Electrician Apprenticeships

Construction inspectors inspect the construction and maintenance of new and existing buildings, bridges, highways and industrial construction to ensure that specifications and building codes are observed and monitor work site safety. They are employed by federal, provincial and municipal governments, construction companies, architectural and civil engineering consulting firms or they may be self-employed.

Electronic service technicians service and repair household and business electronic equipment such as audio and video systems, computers and peripherals, office equipment and other consumer electronic equipment and assemblies. They are employed by electronic service and retail establishments, by wholesale distributors and within service departments of electronic manufacturing companies. Apprentices are also included in this unit group.

Aircraft instrument, electrical and avionics mechanics, technicians and inspectors install, adjust, repair and overhaul aircraft instrument, electrical or avionics systems on aircraft. This unit group also includes avionics inspectors who inspect instrument, electrical and avionics systems following assembly, modification, repair or overhaul. They are employed by aircraft manufacturing, maintenance, repair and overhaul establishments and by airlines and other aircraft operators. Apprentices are also included in this unit group.

Contractors and supervisors in electrical trades and telecommunications occupations supervise and coordinate the activities of workers classified in the following unit groups: Electricians (72200), Industrial electricians (72201), Power system electricians (72202), Electrical power line and cable workers (72203), Telecommunications line and cable installers and repairers (72204) and Telecommunications equipment installation and cable television service technicians (72205). They are employed in a wide range of establishments; places of employment are indicated in the above unit group descriptions. Contractors may be self-employed.

Electricians (except industrial and power system) lay out, assemble, install, test, troubleshoot and repair electrical wiring, fixtures, control devices and related equipment in buildings and other structures. They are employed by electrical contractors and maintenance departments of buildings and other establishments, or they may be self-employed. Apprentices are also included in this unit group.

Elevator constructors and mechanics assemble, install, maintain and repair freight and passenger elevators, escalators, moving walkways and other related equipment. They are employed by elevator construction and maintenance companies.

Electrician Apprenticeship

Selkirk College is endorsed by Skilled Trades BC to deliver all four levels of Construction Electrical Apprenticeship Technical Training as well as levels 1, 2 and 3 of Industrial Electrical Apprenticeship Technical Training to registered electrical apprentices.

Each level of training consists of a full-time, ten-week, on-campus program of study.

Activities include classroom sessions whereas an apprentice you will learn theoretical principals of electricity and applied concepts of the Canadian Electrical Code. Laboratory sessions help to reinforce electrical concepts covered by the theory classroom component.
