To practice as an aircraft instrument, electrical and avionics mechanics, technician or inspectors in Canada, you may need to receive an aircraft maintenance (AME) license from Transport Canada. Eligibility is achieved by completing an Transport Canada-approved AME basic training program, attaining the required amount of civil aviation maintenance work experience, and successfully writing the necessary technical and regulatory exams.

To work as an aircraft instrument, electrical, and avionics mechanic, technician, or inspector in B.C., you may choose to become certified through the Canadian Council for Aviation & Aerospace (CCAA). Eligibility is achieved through documenting competencies and submitting these to the CCAA.

Full licensing as an Aircraft instrument, electrical and avionics mechanics, technicians and inspectors requires work experience.

This instructional program class comprises any program that prepares individuals to apply technical knowledge and skills to the building and reconstruction of automotive and commercial vehicle engines. These programs include courses in cylinder head and block, crack repair, crankshaft inspection and repair, connecting rods and pistons, balancing, block preparation, disassembly and repair, engine assembly, gas and diesel technology, and inspection and machining.

Aircraft Maintenance Diplomas and Apprenticeships

Aircraft instrument, electrical and avionics mechanics, technicians and inspectors install, adjust, repair and overhaul aircraft instrument, electrical or avionics systems on aircraft. This unit group also includes avionics inspectors who inspect instrument, electrical and avionics systems following assembly, modification, repair or overhaul. They are employed by aircraft manufacturing, maintenance, repair and overhaul establishments and by airlines and other aircraft operators. Apprentices are also included in this unit group.

Aircraft mechanics maintain, repair, overhaul, modify and test aircraft structural, mechanical and hydraulic systems. Aircraft inspectors inspect aircraft and aircraft systems following manufacture, modification, maintenance, repair or overhaul. Aircraft mechanics and aircraft inspectors are employed by aircraft manufacturing, maintenance, repair and overhaul establishments, and by airlines and other aircraft operators. Apprentices are also included in this unit group.

The Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Category ‘E’ (Electronics) Diploma prepares you to be an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Technician, who are responsible for the servicing, repair and modification of aircraft electronic systems and components. Approximately 50 per cent of your day will be spent on theory in a classroom setting, followed by hands-on practical training in the shops and hangar located at BCIT’s Aerospace Technology Campus. The program is designed to follow national standards and is approved by Transport Canada (TC). Completion of the program will result in a work experience credit of 18 months of the 48 months required by Transport Canada toward obtaining an Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Category E license (AME E).

Aircraft maintenance engineers specializing in structures are responsible for maintaining and repairing the physical structure of an aircraft, including fuselage, wings, tail, and landing gear, ensuring its structural integrity and safety.

Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Category ‘S’ (Structures) Diploma

The Aircraft Maintenance Engineer Category 'M' (Maintenance) Diploma will teach you how to be a Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME), responsible for the release (certification) of an aircraft after maintenance, inspection, repair or modification. You'll spend approximately 50 per cent of the day on theory discussions in a classroom setting, followed by hands-on practical training in the shops and hangar located at ’s Aerospace Technology Campus. The program is designed to follow a national/international set of standards and is approved by Transport Canada (TC) and the Canadian Council for Aviation and Aerospace (CCAA). Successful completion of the diploma program will result in an experience credit of 18 months (of the 48 months) required by TC to obtain an AME M license. Successful graduation from this program may qualify you for national certification from TC and CCAA.
