The Film Production Diploma is for students with a post-secondary degree interested in filmmaking, screenwriting and producing. You will learn theory and techniques of motion picture production with options to study more deeply in areas of documentary filmmaking, alternative cinema, screenwriting and producing. Additionally, you are expected to work collaboratively and create your own short films in your final year.

1. Completion of a Bachelor's Degree in arts, science or commerce from a recognized post-secondary institution

Academic Admission Requirement

1. Short creative writing sample (4 pages max, 250-500 words, 12-point font, double spaced) - either a short story or a film script.

2. Self-portrait video (1-2 minute max) to show and talk about yourself and what is important to you.

3. Short film or video in which you were a key creative (i.e. director, writer, editor or cinematographer). This portfolio must be no longer than 5 minutes (note: a scene from a longer film is accepted). Applicants should provide an online link to their video portfolio and ensure the video does not need to be downloaded or require a password for viewing. 

4. Background statement on videos (250 words max). This statement should include a short description of the films in your portfolio (where you made the films and why you made them), what role(s) you fulfilled on each of these films and your comments on what you feel worked best and least about each of the film.

5. One-page resume of related experience

Additional Academic Admission Requirement

1. You must have a UBCV student number and post-secondary undergraduate degree in order to apply. If you do not have either requirement, your application will be rejected. 

2. In addition to submitting an online application to UBCV, you also need to apply separately to the UBCV Department of Theatre and Film.

3. If you are already enrolled in the Faculty of Arts at UBCV, you do not need to complete the online UBCV application, but must submit the supplemental application material by 11:59pm PST February 1st. Students from UBCV Vancouver who are enrolled in another faculty or enrolled at UBCV Okanagan must apply to transfer to the UBCV Faculty of Arts by January 15, prior to completing the Film Production supplemental application.

5. Admission is competitive as there is limited enrollment in this program.

Admission Advice

Applications must be submitted for most programs by January for September entry. Early application is recommended. Confirm dates with UBCV.
Exceptions of certain programs are available on UBCV Vancouver Academic Calendar 2023/24.
