The Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Film Production allows you to develop your intellectual, creative, and technical skills as you prepare to embark on a professional career in the film industry. Your coursework will provide you with core disciplines and filmic knowledge as well as practical experience in filmmaking. You'll produce and work on several films while in the program. Upon graduation, you'll be prepared to work in film/tv/new media in any aspect of documentary or fiction filmmaking, or in arts administration.

Students must be admitted into Bachelor of Fine Arts to pursue this program.

1. High school graduation or equivalent

2. English 12 and English 11 or their equivalents (70% in one of them)

3. Minimum six academic/non-academic Grade 12 courses (recommended)

4. Pre-Calculus 11 or Foundations of Math 12 or equivalent 

5. Any Science 11 of Science 12 course or equivalent 

6. A Language 11 or Waiver (includes all second language courses, excludes introductory language 11 courses)

7. Grades presented in all relevant academic Grade 11 and Grade 12 courses that fall under these subject categories* will be looked at:
    - Language Arts
    - Social Studies 
    - Visual and Performing Arts 
        - *Note: There is no minimum number of courses required for admission, but you are encouraged to challenge yourself with a substantial number of courses that are relevant to your intended area of study.

Academic Admission Requirement

1. Short creative writing sample (4 pages max, 250-500 words, 12-point font, double spaced) - either a short story or a film script.

2. Self-portrait video (1-2 minute max) to show and talk about yourself and what is important to you.

3. Short film or video in which you were a key creative (i.e. director, writer, editor or cinematographer). This portfolio must be no longer than 5 minutes (note: a scene from a longer film is accepted). Applicants should provide an online link to their video portfolio and ensure the video does not need to be downloaded or require a password for viewing. 

4. Background statement on videos (250 words max). This statement should include a short description of the films in your portfolio (where you made the films and why you made them), what role(s) you fulfilled on each of these films and your comments on what you feel worked best and least about each of the film.

5. One-page resume of related experience.

1. In addition to submitting an online application to UBCV, you also need to complete the program audition registration form. Visit the departmental program website for more information about the application and admission process.

Two-step Application Deadlines:

Online application to UBCV: January 
BFA Film Production Supplemental Application: February

Verify with UBCV and the Department for specific dates. 
Applications must be submitted for most programs by January for September entry. Early application is recommended. Confirm dates with UBCV.
Exceptions of certain programs are available on UBCV Vancouver Academic Calendar 2023/24.
