Application Deadline Advice

Qualified applicants are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Early application is strongly recommended.

Applicants are admitted based upon their technical skill and experience level in at least one adventure sport. Entry is competitive and applications are screened to ensure an adequate level of outdoor recreation experience has been attained prior to entry to TRU.

Application Fee: $28.68

Academic (minimum grade needed in bracket)

1. One of:

  • high school graduation or equivalent
  • mature student status (be at least 19 years old and out of school for at least two years)

2. English

One of:

  • English 12 (67% in last five years)
  • English 12 First Peoples (67% in last five years)
  • ENGL 0500 (B)
  • Language Proficiency Index (LPI) test (level 3 on the composition section in the last two years)
  • equivalent course

3. Math

One of:

  • Foundations of Math 11 (C)
  • MATH 0510
  • equivalent course


  • be at least 19 years of age by the start of the program
  • attend a program information session
  • submit a Fitness, Health and Medical form
  • complete an Adventure Studies Medical Examination Form
  • sign a Adventure Studies Department Liability Waiver, Assumption of Risk, and Indemnifying Release Form (after acceptance)

Admission Advice

1. The Adventure Studies Department faculty may elect to interview some applicants to determine their readiness for admission. This interview may be conducted at TRU, by phone or video conferencing.

2. You must possess medical coverage and will be required to have additional coverage for any course held in foreign countries, including the US.

English Language Requirements


For students whose first language is not English and wish to enter academic programs without attending ESL courses, you must provide one of the following (minimum scores):

  • A TOEFL score of 88 (internet based) with no section below 20 or 570 (paper based) with a 4.5 on the test of written English
  • An IELTS score of 6.5 with no bands below a 6
  • A Language Proficiency Index score of Level 6
  • A MELAB score of 81
  • A CanTEST score of 4.5 with no component below a 4
  • A CAEL score of 70 with no subset below 60

BC Secondary School (or equivalent)

You must meet the admission requirements of your intended program. To qualify for admission to the Bachelor of Business/Arts/Science degree program you will need to have completed BC Grade 12 (or equivalent).

Mature Student

If you do not meet the admission requirements for your intended program it's possible to gain entry through mature student status. To be classified as a mature student you must be at least 19 years old and have been out of school for at least two years. In such cases the grade level requirement (eg -Grade 10, Grade 12) will be waived however individual course prerequisites must still be met (eg-English 10, English 12).

Special Note: It's possible to make up course prerequisites for your intended program through TRU.

Graduates may ladder directly into TRU's:

  • Adventure Guide Diploma;
  • Adventure Management Diploma;
  • Bachelor of Tourism Management Degree (Adventure Major).
