 Academic (minimum grade needed in bracket)

1. One of:

  • high school graduation or equivalent
  • mature student status (be at least 19 years old an out of school for at least two years)

2. English

One of:

  • English 12 (73% grade in last five years)
  • English 12 First Peoples (73% grade in last five years)
  • Language Proficiency Index (LPI) score (level 5 in last two years)
  • ENGL 0600 (C+)
  • ESAL 0570 and 0580 (C+)

Non-Academic

  • general medical exam
  • provide immunization record
  • volunteer and/or work experience of at least 25 hours in a licensed group, preschool or childcare facility under the supervision of a qualified early childhood educator
  • Readiness interview
  • Criminal Record Check (pre-practicum and pre-employment requirement)

Admissions Advice

1. Interviews are granted once you have completed all other admission requirements, except the medical exam and the Criminal Record Check. Admission interviews usually begin in April and continue until the program is full.

English Language Requirements

Summary

For students whose first language is not English and wish to enter academic programs without attending ESL courses, you must provide one of the following (minimum scores):

  • A TOEFL score of 88 (internet based) with no section below 20 or 570 (paper based) with a 4.5 on the test of written English
  • An IELTS score of 6.5 with no bands below a 6
  • A Language Proficiency Index score of Level 6
  • A MELAB score of 81
  • A CanTEST score of 4.5 with no component below a 4
  • A CAEL score of 70 with no subset below 60

General Admission Requirements (All Students)

English Language Skills - You must have adequate English language skills to participate in your intended program of study.

BC Secondary School (or equivalent)

You must meet the admission requirements of your intended program. To qualify for admission to the Bachelor of Business/Arts/Science degree program you will need to have completed BC Grade 12 (or equivalent).

 

Out-of-Province

You must meet the admission requirements of your intended program. To qualify for admission to the Bachelor of Business/Arts/Science degree program you will need to have completed BC Grade 12 (or equivalent).

Mature Student

If you do not meet the admission requirements for your intended program it's possible to gain entry through mature student status. To be classified as a mature student you must be at least 19 years old and have been out of school for at least two years. In such cases the grade level requirement (eg -Grade 10, Grade 12) will be waived however individual course prerequisites must still be met (eg-English 10, English 12).

Special Note: It's possible to make up course prerequisites for your intended program through TRU.

Block Transfer within TRU

Graduates may wish to complete one more semester of study to obtain TRU's Early Child Education Post Diploma Certificate. Contact an academic advisor or program personnel for full details.

Final Note: Minimum grade point average and other requirements may apply. All transfer requirements should be confirmed with advising personnel within the institution.

Inter-Institutional Block Arrangements

Introductory Note: One year of academic study is normally made up of 15 units.

Graduate of the Early Childhood Education Diploma are eligible for the following block transfer:

  • 3 units within the Bachelor of Social Work Degree - UVic
  • 15 units within the BA in Child and Youth Care Degree - UVic
