1) Program Admission Requirements

Academic (minimum grade needed in bracket)

1. High school graduation or equivalent.

2. English

One of:

  • English Studies 12 (73%)
  • English First Peoples 12 (73%)
  • out-of-province equivalent (73%)
  • Language Proficiency Index (LPI) test (level 5 on composition with at least 70% on all other categories in last two years)
  • ENGL 0600 (C+)
  • ESAL 0570 (C+) and 0580 (C+)
  • Acceptable result on TRU English Assessment
  • equivalent course

3. Pre-calculus 12 (73%) or equivalent

4. Chemistry 11 (73%) or equivalent. Chemistry 12 is highly recommended

5. Physics (73%) or equivalent

6. Following courses are also recommended:

  • Calculus 12
  • Drafting 12
  • Computing or Information Technology course involving computer programming and problem solving experience with high level languages such as Java, C/C++, or Visual Basic.
Admission Advice

1. If you are a high school student and still currently completing your grade 12, you may be considered for conditional admission based on the following criteria: 

  • Pre-calculus 11 (80%) or Pre-calculus 12 (73%) or equivalent
  • Physics 11 (80%) or Physics 12 (73%) or equivalent
  • Chemistry 11 (80%) or Chemistry 12 (73%) or equivalent
  • English 11 (80%) or English 12 (73%, combined high school and government exam) or equivalent

Note: Grade 12 results will be used when a grade is presented on the transcript.

2. There are 60 seats available in the TRU first-year engineering transfer program and admission is competitive based on academic performance in Grade 11 and 12 admission prerequisite courses. Meeting minimum entrance requirements does not guarantee admission.

3. Students who have completed parts of a first-year engineering program at a recognized university will be considered for admission on a case by case basis.  It may require an upgrade or completion of pre-requisite courses.

4. If you have completed a year of post-secondary studies in science or related studies, you can also be considered for admission to the TRU engineering transfer program on a case by case basis. You are expected to have:

  • Overall GPA of 3.00 (B) or better
  • Grades of B (or better) in first-year mathematics courses
  • Grades of B (or better) in first-year physics courses
  • Grades of C+ (or better) in first-year English courses

5. After acceptance into the program, you must attend one of several pre-registration orientation sessions which are normally held in May and June to select courses and be registered in the program.

English Language Requirements

Summary

For students whose first language is not English and wish to enter academic programs without attending ESL courses, you must provide one of the following (minimum scores):

  • TOEFL iBT score of 88 overall, with no section below 20
  • TOEFL paper-based 570 overall, with a 4.5 on the test of written English
  • IELTS score of 6.5, with no bands below 6.0
  • MELAB score of 81
  • CanTEST score of 4.5 with no component below 4.0
  • CAEL score of 70, with no subset below 60

General Admission Requirements (All Students)

English Language Skills - You must have adequate English language skills to participate in your intended program of study.

BC Secondary School (or equivalent)

You must meet the program-specific admission requirements of your intended program. To qualify for admission to the Bachelor of Business/Arts/Science degree program, you will need to have completed BC Grade 12 (or equivalent).

 

Out-of-Province

You must meet the program-specific admission requirements of your intended program. To qualify for admission to the Bachelor of Business/Arts/Science degree program, you will need to have completed BC Grade 12 (or equivalent).

 

BC Transfer Student

If you have previous education or training, you may be eligible for credit toward your TRU program. For details on Transfer Credit, please check here.

Mature Student

If you do not meet the admission requirements for your intended program it's possible to gain entry through mature student status. To be classified as a mature student you must be at least 19 years old and have been out of school for at least two years. In such cases the grade level requirement (eg -Grade 10, Grade 12) will be waived however individual course prerequisites must still be met (eg-English 10, English 12).
