Description

Construction Electricians install, construct, alter, repair, maintain, commission, test, service, calibrate, and operate related electrical and electronic systems in any building or structure.

The program combines technical and work-based training. It generally takes four years to complete.

The technical training is made up of four levels. Each level is 10 weeks. This block of training is normally delivered through an ITA approved training institution. Sometimes it may also be met through approved training models (distance education, part-time) and/or a level challenge exam.

The work-based training totals 6000 hours. Based on a 30-hour work week this involves 200 weeks of training.

Pre-requisites

Recommended

One of:

  • Grade 12 with demonstrated mechanical aptitude, Principles of Math 11, Physics 11, and English 12 or Communications 12
  • completion of an electrical industry assessment exam with equivalences in Principles of Math 11, Physics 11, English 12 or Communications 12, and technical and mechanical aptitude
  • graduation from an Electrical Foundation Program (approved by ITA) in the past five years

Important Note: It is strongly recommended by Industry to have at least one year of work-based training as an electrical apprentice before starting your in-school technical training.

Red Seal Endorsement

The Red Seal endorsement allows qualified tradespeople to practice their trade anywhere in the country.  To receive this endorsement you must pass a Red Seal exam. Depending on your trade there is anywhere from 100 to 150 multiple choice questions on the exam. The passing grade is 70%.
